no real help here... i've only been to the mexican cultural center, and that was for a SXSW party, not a wedding.  however, it looks like you're looking for larger venues downtown, and I'll plug my venue - The Austin Club.  They don't advertise, so I wouldn't have heard about them if my wedding planner hadn't told me to look there.  we loved it and i definitely recommend them.  not a single problem and my planner said that they were one of the most competent venues that she had ever worked with.  pictures up at http://www.nateandtiffany.com/albums/Wedding

thanks for the info. we moved our wedding date and already have a caterer booked so we're looking for a place we can bring in our own caterer and alcohol so there's a lot of space i'm not considering. it is beautiful though.

I wish I could see more pictures of them all... they all seem really cool (I would love to shoot a wedding at any of these, simply because it's off the beaten path!). They're all so different though, so try to think about which style meshes with yours best. The Inn has a vintage garden feel, whereas the other two are much more modern. Also try and consider who will be the easiest to work with, how much you'll have to spend on decor at each venue, etc. It may be cool to have a wedding at a place that no one has used for that purpose before, but it may also be a headache for that same reason... they've never done a wedding before. Ah, decisions decisions... I'm sure in the end you'll make the one that's right for you! Good luck! :)

I was really excited about the Inn when I was looking at venues - BUT at the time I was looking there was all that construction on MLK & Pearl street which kind of put me off the place due to lack of parking which I still think may be an issue. Also, the inside of the inn is very...victorian? Like - old lady B&B IMO, and I did not want to deal with that. Plus - it is not big enough to have anything inside (and not many bathrooms...) so it would all have to be outside and be tented. The exterior was beautiful but kind of small. They would have to 'flip' the tables after dinner to make room for dancing and while I thought the patio was nice and the brick past that was nice, it would not be conducive to dancing with any kind of heel on. The lady who owns the place was nice and I thought it was a good price for a downtown venue, but not worth it for what we needed given all the cons. I think for a dinner or birthday party, shower even, it would be great - or even a smaller wedding like 100 or less people.

thank you so much for all the info and thoughts! i definitely want a reception that is very modern (hence flatbed press and MACC), but my fiance loves something more old fashioned like the inn! i'm hoping we will find something that we both love (i'll gently nudge him to the more modern venues though of course!)

I haven't been to a wedding at the Mexican American Cultural Center but I have been to several other events there. I was just thinking the other day, "Yknow, this would be a really nice place for a wedding."  All the greenery and trees in the neighborhood contrast with the modern building in a nice way, and you can still see downtown--or at least giant condo buildings--nearby. In a good way.I think the outdoor spaces would be slightly more festive than the auditorium. Not sure if they rent out the gallery too.

yeah, they don't rent out the gallery. i like it that there's so many different spaces. i thought of a cocktail hour on their big balcony and then the reception inside the auditorium...i think you could do some neat things with lighting in that room!
