Wedding Vows & Ceremony Discussions

My dog & Nephews

Hello - I want to incorporate my dog in the ceremony as well as my two nephews (10 & 8).   I'm not having any flower girls.  Everything I've read is that these three should all be the ring bearer but I think that's a bit much.  Any suggestions?

  • Completely agree with cfas.  My boxer is very social but I knew I would run into problems with him during the ceremony and afterwards, I didn't want to burden anybody with it.

But if it is very important to you and you are able to answer all of the questions above then just have all 3 of them go down the aisle.  Depending on the gender your dog could be a "groomsdog" maybe a "The Best Dog", if its a girl maybe a "Bridesdog" or "Dog of Honor".

  • What of the dog had to go potty and someone steps in it? What if you step on it? To me it's too much work and another thing to worry about!

  • My two nephews, age 12 & 11, were the ring-bearers along with our dog, and they walked her down.

Granted, I may very well be the exception to this rule b/c I was married on the beach and what worked for me may not work for you.  Fortunately, our guests were well aware that she would be there and she stayed glued to our sides the entire time.  While taking our vows, she laid down right beside and stayed there until we kissed and walked out or away or whatever.

You must be very confident that your guests will be okay with this, that the dog will not take off running away from you and especially, that the dog has been able to do it's business before the ceremony.

And "Dog of Honor" is just too cute!  :)

  • Thanks everyone!  Just to clarify - Yes, my dog Monte is extremely well behaved otherwise I wouldn't even consider him being a part of the wedding.  He is a 7 year old chocolate Labrador.  And if you know Labs, they are super sweet and listen (after age 5) to their human folk.

We are planning on the ceremony in Estes Park, CO.  They don't typically allow dogs in the Rocky Mountain National Park, however, our coordinator has her connections - so we got the green light.  As far as cleaning up, we are responsible so I don't foresee that as a problem.  Our reception will be in the lodge where there are pet friendly guest rooms where Monte can nap the rest of the evening.   As for my guests - we are having a small intimate wedding of 20 people and everyone already knows Monte.  So being said - I absolutely love the idea of Groomsdog or Best Dog.  That is super cute!
