Hate DJ's but cant afford a good band

So we are in quite the predicament...we really arent fans of DJ's (we dont want our wedding to feel like a dance club) but we dont have $5,000 to spend on a good band (aka - no cheesy costumes and great covers). Has anyone else run into this problem and if so what was your solution? Any ideas or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!!

I think you may just need to find the right DJ for you. A good DJ should be able to create the atmosphere you want at your wedding, not just a dance club. Ours realizes that we are a bit more chill, so he's catering the playlist to that.

Have you looked at hiring a band for just a portion of the reception? I have never looked into a band so I'm not sure if they have a set number of hours you may book but if you can book them for half the time, it would be cheaper.

My FI and I were having the exact same problem, I did not want a DJ because I was completely concerned with it being too cheesy or feel like a dance club. The only reason we didn't go with a band was because we couldnt't find one in the area that we loved and the more we thought about it we wanted to hear certain songs from that artist. Our first dance is going to be Bon Jovi "Thank you for loving me" and I coudn't picture anyone else signing it. When we met with a DJ, just to see, we fell in love with him (Joel, Greenbelt DJ). He took us into his staging room so you see just what his set up looks like for the night and played our song! It almost brought me to tears. I was very anti DJ to begin with but after meeting with Joel I knew he would make it the feel and look we were going for. Honestly that's all it took, once you find the right person that cheesy DJ feeling goes away. They won't do something you don't want. :-) Good luck!

I agree with PP. We weren't to hot on the idea of a DJ either because of the cheesy factor, plus we aren't big partiers, so we didn't want a night club vibe either. However, after figuring out that band just isn't in our budget, we started researching DJs. We decided on Airwave Dave. He's a bit of a goof, but he has a huge personality that we felt would draw people out onto the dance floor and would make it a fun night. You just have to find one that you feel fits you & your style.
