Short and sweet ceremony

I met with a few JOPs and tell them I want a short and sweet ceremony. My fiance and I are not (publicly) mushy/lovey-dovey people.

Yet, when the JOP sends me an outline of the ceremont it ends up being 9-11 pages long and VERY drawn out (in my opinion).

Can anyone recommend a website with examples of short and sweet (NON RELIGIOUS) ceremonies?

Re: Short and sweet ceremony

  • All it really has to be is:

Declaration of intent/commitment (Q: "Have you both come freely to commit to each other as husband and wife for as long as you both shall live?" A: "I have")
Exchange vows: (Q: "Do you kfritz take FI to be your husband?" A: "I do" and then the same for FI)
Exchange rings. ("FI, take this ring as a symbol of my love and faithfulness" and then the same for your FI)
Announce couple (Ladies and Gentlemen, I present Mr. & Mrs Kfritz! You may kiss the bride! Or whatever)

Each JOP or state may have specific requirements so I'd definitely make sure you have your bases covered.
  • Don't worry it's going to go quicker than you think. Ours was 25 pages and was under half an hour.

  • Talk to the JOP about was is absolutely essential to the ceremony.  There are things that must be said for the ceremony to be legal.  If you don't want the rest, then cut it out.  However, I agree with Hoboken that it will go much faster than you think.
  • Ours was ten minutes, including two songs! Agreement to marry & the license are all you need!
  • Where are you in CT?  Our officiant, Chaz Zezulka is out of Mystic and he's awesome.  We're going with "short and sweet" also, and he's been very receptive to that.  He did try to suggest the unity candle/sand/wine nonsense, but when we told him we didn't want any fluff, he understood.  Our ceremony is less than 10 minutes.  Good luck!  Just be firm with what you want, a good officiant should respect that.
