off the beaten path reception hall

Hello! I'm a former Austin knottie who doesn't post much anymore (though I lurk so I can look at all your beautiful pictures!). One of my best friends is getting married and I'm trying to help her with the planning and we're really stuck on the venue. She's expecting maybe 250 people. It'll be in August, so she doesn't want anything outside. The ceremony will be at our church, so she just needs a reception area. She's pretty non-traditional, so it doesn't even really need room for tables or anything. She's having a dessert spread and dancing, and that's about it.

I'm still pretty familiar with many of the major venues in the area from planning my own wedding. But given her needs (big, open space on a tight, tight budget), I wanted to see if there's any unusual ideas out there. Art galleries, ranches/homes for rent, old barns, restaurants, etc. If you've got any ideas, hit me up! Thanks, ladies!

check out the mexican american cultural center (http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/macc/). their auditorium and lobby are awesome and that's where we will be having our reception and it's really affordable.

you can rent out flatbed press, but i think it would be too small for 250.

also maybe check arthouse on congress, not sure what their capacity is.

I highly recommend Palm Door.  It's a really good value for what you get.  I believe we are paying 3K for a Sat evening wedding.  You get the venue for 12 hours and you can bring in your own tables, chairs, etc.  They encourage you to use their caterer (Pink Avocado), but I was able to negotiate with the coordinator and waive the outside catering fees.  The location is awesome, right in the center of downtown with convenient access to 35.  The site also has very liberal rules on decor.  They allow you to nail things to the walls and ceilings...AND the venue comes with a day-of coordinator.  (Margaret is a dream to work with).  www.palmdoor.com
