Has anyone noticed...

That some of the weddings in other parts of the country seem to be a million times fancier than what I'm used to growing up in the midwest. Or is this just me?

No, I agree.  I didn't even know that sit-down dinners were common until I started posting here on The Knot.

I've only been to one wedding that had a sit-down dinner reception, in my life!  lol

It kinda stresses me out. I am kind of a simple girl, and I want a simple wedding. When I see all those super fancy weddings, it makes mine seem lame.

I'm glad you brought that up. I'm from Los Angeles but living here in OK. My wedding will be here and friends and family from LA (and else where) will be invited. I use to babysit in LA and would be called upon to sit for weddings at country clubs and hotels. They were hugely expensive and extremely formal with unlimited alcohol and a sit down meal... even for the babysitters.  My budget and lifestyle in no way compares or wants to even compete with that. I'd rather spend that kind of money on something of substance. My fiance would be over the top embarrassed by all.  However, all those weddings I attended (by way of employment for the most part) has resonated with me and I'm having difficulties fighting what I know I want to what I think it should be. We're having a Halloween 2011 wedding. Our guests will be encouraged to dress up and we're going to have a lot of fun.  It's easy to get roped into what you think might be expected but it doesn't have to be that way. Maybe OK Brides aren't going in debt for their weddings like they are in other parts of the country.  Spending that kind of money and having that type of reception focuses on the wedding not the marriage.  Ours won't be lame. They'll be authentic.
