Is this tacky?

So I'm thinking about having a backyard wedding. My fiance's parents own a large, beautiful property, however  don't know what I should do about dinnerware, i.e. plates, glasses, silverware, ect. Renting seems so expensive but I worry about having paper and plastic products. Wouldn't they be too tacky for a wedding?

You should get a caterer who can provide that with their price.  I think paper is tacky.

Someone somewhere is going to think something you do is tacky. I recommended http://www.greenpartygoods.com/. I'm not sure how prices would compare to renting. Their bamboo products would be fitting for a backyard wedding.

Price all depends what you're going to do for your reception and your guest list. Are you going to do a full sit down dinner, a buffet, or hors d'oeuvres reception? Ask any caterers you interview if they provide dishware and silverware.

I agree don't do plastic, not for a wedding. I would check out weparty.com I am getting my linens through them. They have different monthly sales for certain items and will work within your budget.

It's only tacky if you allow it to be tacky. If you are trying to have a classy black tie wedding and you use paper plates and plastic utensils, then yes it's tacky. Thebest thing to do is run with the idea of the backyard wedding (they used to happen all the time in the 80's) and make it a little less formal. Plan some family reunion type events like a 3 legged potato sack race.

I think the people in attendance are much more important than what reception hall you have it in. A wedding is about family. I've been to firehall weddings that were awesome and weddings at the Crystal Tea Room that sucked ass. It's all about your family.

If you're having an outside caterer they may supply the dinnerware. You'll have to check with them.

You could also just go to the dollar store and buy white plates, etc.

I don't want to say it's tacky because I don't like to judge and everyone has their own opinion and noone knows what anyone elses budget is.  But in my own opinion I would not do paper for my wedding.  Now...  if you are having a VERY informal affair then it MIGHT work but even still I would try to exhausted every possiblity out there before you settle for paper.  There are many options.... and even like jajph1974 said go to the dollar store and get white plates.
