I am thinking thats the going rate but i could be wrong. I have violinist for my ceremony (which is only 30 minutes if that) and it was $275.

Are you having a church ceremony?  If not, can you just pay your DJ to come for an extra hour and play music?  It may only be $100 that way.

I first looked into musicians but couldn't convince myself to pay that much.  My DJ is coming early and will play songs (that I chose) for the ceremony.  We're having a casual outdoor ceremony though.

Try contacting your local college (depending on how good they are) and ask them if they have an orchestra or music department. Normally, they are looking to add things to their resume so they will do it for a minimal rate.

or even try contacting a high school.  my old high school band director used to put his best strings/wind instruments and take them to gigs for weddings.  my MOH's sister used to do it for him (she now plays and sings for the army choir) and used to be very reasonable if I remember correctly.

local college is a good route too!  or do like i am, having my DJ play the music.  it actually is free pretty much cause we're tying into the house speakers at our venue!

it costs that much because it's a hassel to get to the venue. But I found out that once they are there and you want them for the cocktail hour its only 50-100 extra. I know a violinist who will do a ceremony for $200.  I got a violinist and harpist for ceremony and cocktail for 550.
