Wedding Vows & Ceremony Discussions

A little help with decorations?

I'm having my wedding ceremony in the front of this old mansion. I wanted to decorate it some how but kinda stumped on what to do. I thought about flower pedals down the stairs, with a lantern on ever other step? I don't how that I that would look, with the wedding at 2:30. Any suggestions or other ideas? We are also doing a unity candle, but have no clue where we would put the table, since we would be standing on the top step. . .  I added a picture below if this would help. . .

  • I think it's beauty is in it's simplicity. I think the lantern idea would be wasted at 2:30pm. I can see doing two small floral arrangements for each step in front of the inner columns to better define the focal point, you and your future spouse.  I really can't see the sides or how deep the last step is to the doors but perhaps you could put a table slightly off center closer to the doors and then stand slightly off center so your guests can see you light them at that time.

I really don't see a need for decorations, this place is beautiful!

I love this idea, I also thought about maybe putting it down on the ground so we could walk down the steps toward the guest to light the unity candle. That way they all could see us.

I love this place its old and so beautiful, I didn't think much decorations would be needed, just hints.

  • I like the idea of the flower petals.  How about some flowers on the steps?  I know there are some fake (or you could get real) orchids and just put them in pots.  Something like this......

They have a ton of different colors to match your wedding theme.  Or you could put pictures of you and your groom on every other step in an old antiqued frame

  • I also agree it's beautiful in itself.  But I don't see how latterns will over power it or anything.  I do believe petals will just blow away so I wouldn't worry about that.

I was totally worried that this would happen, So I was like how about Lanterns?? But everyone I mention it to says at 2:30 in the afternoon you wouldn't really see the candles. But it actually is kinda shaded there in the front, bc of the trees.

  • -Weddings in a church have the bride and groom right in front of the (centered) altar... why not put the table for the unity candle centered right in front of the doors(behind your and your priest)? You and your groom can stand on either side of it to light it.
-Having the unity candle near the guests is lovely! However you might want to consider if you want your guests to sit and watch you navigate those steps in heels both ways... it might put a lull in the ceremony. Also consider the fire danger if there's an accident or a strong wind.
-The unity candle to the side could work nicely... especially if you have a matching table on the other side for signing the marrage liscence or maybe just some flowers(hey, you could put a vase there then set your bouquet in it during the ceremony so your maid of honor doesn't have to hold two bouquets!) Because the house is so symmetrical I would continue that in your decorations.
-Why not use these (see photo) on either side of the walkway starting just past the guests continuing past the stairs and ending with the last two on either side of the stairs right up next to the porch? You could hang lanterns or flowers from them(or alternate). Link to theknot.com photo:
