Military Brides

CAL

So it looks like there is an update to the new United Pet Policy (see TN).

Originally, I wasn't thinking it would make much difference for me, since Missy is pretty small and can be carried on. But I still did some digging/researching and found a lot of Airlines don't allow Pets as Carry on for international flights. :( including Hawaii. So it looks like we both would have to send our lil girls as Cargo. This makes me SUPER sad.

Oh and Eff you United for banning my dog from June to Sept every year. So if we PCS abroad during the summer United isn't even an option!!

ETA: I'm sorry if I offend anyone with ties to United.

Re: CAL

  • Shan- I think I saw something about this before. Not only are they cargo now but cargo prices have gone up.mit can cost thousands of dollars for a dog now.

Hike, it's getting messy. United has agreed to allow Military familes on orders to waive the 3rd party requirement for cargo travel. This is suppose to relieve some of the outrageous costs but it doesn't say anything about United's fees.

For me personally, we would pay whatever we had to because Missy is a family member, however, I am not comfortable sending her as Cargo for safety reasons. We would basically have to put her in a coma because she is very dependent on being near humans, conversely if she was in the cabin she would okay. It makes me very sad because up until now I was dying for an UK assignment next.

Shan- I think they may be "banning" your dog in those months because it's so hot. They don't regulate air temps n cargo. Especially if she is a short-snouted dog? I know my Binxy kitty can't fly cargo cuz he's half Persian and has a flat face. It has to do with breathing issues.

  • Is the military now.just contracted with United? If not, can't SMs and their family members fly wig a different airline that doesn't have these restrictions and fees. Part of me is glad we didn't have a pup while in Japan. I know a lot of those who petitioned this are stationed there.

I am unaware of the military contract status but this change is coming up now because United is merging with Continental. I have checked (very limited checking) with the major airlines that I am familiar with flying internationally and they all seem to prohibit pets traveling as Carry On during international flights.

You're right - they ban for health/safety concerns.... but I think since most short nosed breeds are small, they should be allowed to be carried on. (or at least for our dog since she is a whooping 13lbs).

It just makes me sad that this is getting in the way (not Missy but the Policy) of one of my dreams.
  • That's really depressing! Though I must say, you wouldn't be able to really bring her to the UK - my understanding is that each way requires 6 months of quarantine for various illnesses, specifically hoof-and-mouth from the UK. My cousin brought her dogs to the US from the UK and they had to drive an hour every weekend to visit their dogs in quarantine. So sad!

I would rather leave them with family while we're deployed than make them go through that. I know if it ever comes down to it, we'll pay the outrageous fees to bring Sasha along, but if it means she'll be in quarantine for a long time (more than 2 weeks), I'd probably just leave her with my brother or FI's sister - both of whom love dogs and would be happy to have ours.

You about gave me a heart attack.... They changed their rules and Missy is microchipped and up for a fresh vaccine this year... and for sure before we PCS again.

    CN:
Pet travel rules changed on 1 January 2012 when the UK brought its procedures into line with the European Union. From this date all pets can enter or re-enter the UK from any country in the world without quarantine provided they meet the rules of the scheme, which will be different depending on the country or territory the pet is coming from.
