Army brides- Military dependent ID, etc?

My FI told me that I will need a military dependant ID, and something else, but he hasn't gone into much detail about how we go about getting them or any of that. Can anyone give me some info about what all documents I should get as an Army wife, and how to go about getting them? I am so lost! Thanks ladies.

The only document you will get is a dependent ID.  You can get that done on any base, and usually all you need is your marriage license and another form of ID.  My dependent ID is the first thing we took care of after the wedding as that was the first form of ID with my married name on it.  Some people have thought they needed ID in their married name already, but in my experience you don't.  It wouldn't hurt to call the office to double check first.

Also, you want to get enrolled in DEERS as soon as you can after the wedding, and then from there they can get you enrolled in Tricare.  For us we were able to do my ID, Deers and Tricare all at once.

If you have a second email account you can just create a new account, and just stop using this one.

Usually you can get enrolled in DEERS at the same time as getting your dependent ID.  We went to the processing center at the reserve base where we were last stationed and they took care of everything there for us (ID and DEERS).

Thanks! He is in Reserve, so we will have to find the closest base and just get it done.

I could be wrong but if its your first time I think they want two forms of ID.  Or thats what they said last time I went to renew my ID, that if it expired I would need 2 forms because it would be like getting a new one.  I might go online to double check because I very well could be wrong lol

OK, I double checked if you are over 18, which I'm assuming you are since you are getting married, you need two forms of ID!

You don't need to change your name first, I don't think-- when we went (I got mine done at the Pentagon, there's a website somewhere that I found back then where I could make an appointment online)- I just took my passport, my SSC, my DL and our marriage license. I didn't need all that ID, I just figured might as well take it.

The guy who did it just did it in my married name. They also enroll you in DEERS at the same time, though I did have to go switch my Tricare to PRIME later on somewhere else (I went to the Naval Hospital to do that).

However, the way your name is in DEERS is not how they have it on file. I haven't actually gone to SS yet (when I got my new DL they just did my married name then too-- they're not supposed to, but mine was expiring, the lady was nice, and I guess I'm charming like that, because she just did it for me anyway) and so now I got lazy and haven't done it. The Marines told my H that they have no proof I changed my name because my SS doesn't think I did, so anyway...on orders and such I still have my maiden name printed on them. That reminds me I have to go to SS like, yesterday.

You'll need to know your SS number, but it's better to just  bring the card with you because that can also act as your 2nd form of ID. And like others have said, they'll enroll you in DEERS the same time, and you can go to the hospital afterwards and have them put you on the system for Tricare. Your ID will also say that you have Tricare.

I found out that our state does not even have an actual Army base...GAH! We will probably have to end up travelling out of state just to get it done. Just to clarify- to get your military ID, you need to go to a base for your branch, right? My FI had said he would check to see if it was possible to go to the AFB to do it, but that doesn't make sense to me. I could be wrong though, considering he is the one in the military and not me... :) When he got his ID renewed, he didn't go to a base though, he went to some sort of other facility to get it done. Is this possible for a spouse ID? If so, that may be a bit easier.

yup you can go anywhere-- they're all the same anyway. Some places have different rules, though, so check. For my H's branch, he had to physically go with me. I know in some cases, the sponsor just has to fill out a form. Some places you need an appointment. Some places you need to bring different stuff. I'd just call where you're planning to go and find out what you need to bring with you and if your H needs to come...it's pretty painless if you do everything right.

Ditto about going to any base.  But if it's an actual base with a gate your FI will have to go with you regardless because you can't get on without a dependent ID or someone taking you on.

I forgot to add this yesterday, but check with the PSD office(this is where you enrolled in DEERS and get the card) what they actually want you to bring.

H and I were going to get my ID from Nellis Air Base in Vegas but when I called to asked what we needed, the man I talked to said we need the certified copy of our marriage certificate. He literally specified that for me and said we'd have to wait a few days-10 days to get that so we can't even go there the day after the wedding. So we just ended up getting my ID here in Japan, and the process was actually a little different and a bit more difficult here.

You pretty much have all the facts from the other ladies but I just wanted to say definitely call the office you will be going to get your ID at and find out exactly what you need. Most of the girls on here didn't need their last name officially (meaning, new SSC with your new last name) changed beforehand, but in my case I had to get my dependent ID with my maiden name because that's what my SSC said. So, I'll have to go back and get a new one when I do that. Also, my husband had to go in with me and we had to have an appointment. Just call and they'll tell you all you need to know! =)
