Degrees online

hey everyone,

I'm starting to look into getting my masters degree. We know we will be in Georgia but I think the best thing for me to do is find a program online. Is anyone getting their degree online? What school are you using?

Thanks in advance

I may have to do this next station, depending on where we end up. My only suggestion would be to make sure that you aren't just going to one of those basic "online only" colleges for your master's. Hook up with an actual university like Georgia Tech or State or whathaveyou that works best for your degree focus. What's the masters going to be in?

I looked into it. I think it is worthwhile depending on what kind of degree, area of study you are looking into. For me I want to go on to get a Ph.D and teach at the collegiate level (University) my advisors during undergrad said a degree from Phoenix (online course) would be worthless for what I would want to do.

To be honest, I applied and got into a Grad. Program at a local University near our next base. We will be there long enough for me to complete the year and half long program. I also don't do well teaching myself so I fear an online program isn't right for me.

Have you thought about contacting local University to see what the cost/length of your desired program? I would also talk to the Family Resourse Office at your H's base. Call at the least. They can be extremely helpful as well and will give you an unbiased answer.

Thanks girls! I definitely am not looking for a university that is only online. For some reason they've always seemed shady to me. I could be wrong though. I am not against going to called, it's just hard to research the area when I'm not there and have never been there.

When I was thinking of staying in the business world, I was going to get an MBA from Thunderbird, which is a school in Arizona that has a distance education program and is actually the #1 International MBA program in the country (I know, you haven't heard of it... it's this weird niche school, but international business people know it well!  It's ranked higher than Harvard, Stanford, UPenn, NYU, etc. for their International MBA according to US News and several other rankings).

Make sure the degree is worth it for what you want and that people in your industry will respect it.  Also, make sure you can earn back the tuition in a reasonable amount of time or else it's not worth taking out the loans.  I'd advise against online only schools as they tend to be a bit of a rip off. But most universities now offer online degrees that are a great value since you don't have to pay as much as on-campus classwork!

Georgia Southern University has a great online program that offers several masters programs.  I also have several friends who are going to school online through Central Texas.  They have all said great things about it.  One has taken online classes through Kaplan before and hated it.

I've heard bad things about for-profit universities like Phoenix, so I'd double check that whatever you go with is a non-profit.

What do you want to do with your Masters? Of course it's important to have a specific career plan so you can work toward it while you're in school :-D

My dream is to do School Counseling. I'm not sure if that will work out so my other interests are higher education and library science. I would also look at technology.

I can't seem to love anything other than school counseling though.

Ooh do they have online-only courses in school counseling? I'd think they'd require some lab hours and such for the counseling stuff.

What makes you think it wouldn't work out? I know teaching jobs are scarce now, is it the same for school counselors?

They offer "mostly online" programs. Liberty University in Virginia offers a mostly online program but I'd have to go to campus four different times throughout the program for 4 days each time.

I guess there can be no perfect timing. I just worry that if we get pregnant soon then it will change the whole plan.

It COULD work and I'm seriously considering it. I also really like the higher education idea though too. What if I can't pick?? :-) Haha

My Dad has gotten his 2nd bachelors degree, masters, and is now 1 semester away from finishing his PhD (He's a teacher at 2 community colleges, and High Point University, where he got his 2nd BA). He did his Masters at ECU (East Carolina University) and had to actually go to campus I believe twice. His teachers were awesome and they begged him to come work for them, but he didn't want to move 4 hours away.  With his PhD he's only actually 30 mins away from his school (UNC-G this time) but is still able to do all of his stuff online. Aaannd he does all this, while teaching more than full time...

    He's one of my Hero's!

That novel was to say: Get in touch with an actual university, explain the situation to them, and I'm sure they'll work with you!! Also, http://www.militaryonesource.com/MOS/MarineCorps.aspx?MRole=Family&Branch=MarineCorps&Component=Active
They have lots of great Financial Aid info!!

HTH!! and good luck with the baby making!!Smile

I am getting my Masters in Envrionmental Management through University of Maryland University College which is an offshoot of Univeristy of Maryland and love it (I am in SC). I have two kids and work 40 hours a week so the online classes work well for me. I have a 4.0 and just got a scholarship for that. Good luck.

You may want to consider Independence University. It is ACCSC (Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges) accredited, so you don’t need to worry about its legitimacy, allows you to complete your degree online in its entirety, which is something you’re looking for and offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in Business and Healthcare. Check them out; maybe you’ll find a degree that interests you.
