Ladies, I know most of you have a lot of experience with moves, so I wanted to see if anyone had any insight or tips. Yes, I know I'm a post hoar today, sorry! Trying to check off some of my 'to do' list!
So we're putting all our stuff in storage indefinitely, when we get FI's orders in September we'll know when and where we're going. It's likely either South Carolina or back in Miami. The military is not paying for any of this move (they'll give a small travel stipend, but it'll cover our drive from RI down to wherever we're going and nothing else). We have the option of leaving stuff in storage until he reports to TBS in the spring, but we'd have to rent furnished for 5 months, so it just doesn't seem worth it - the difference in cost to rent furnished would probably be the same as moving our stuff! Plus we'd rather have our stuff around us than some stranger's.
Okay, so I was crunching numbers - we really have two options that I can see, let me know if you can think of any more!
1) Rent UHaul, pack up with stuff, move to storage unit. When we come back, fly down to Miami, pack up UHaul, drive to wherever he's stationed, unpack. For local move, would come to around $950. For move to South Carolina, would come to around $2100.
2) Use PODS. They drop off box, we fill it up, they pick it up and store it. When we know where we're going, they deliver it to our new address. We unpack, they pick up box. For local move, would come to around $1300. For move to South Carolina, would come to around $2250.
Thoughts? Anything I'm missing? I included all potential expenses I could think of with both options - gas, truck rental, storage expenses, delivery, flights back to Miami if we're going to drive it ourselves, etc.
Obviously the PODS seems tons easier, but it's a bit more expensive. I think FI is going to die when he sees how expensive this is going to be either way!
