Wedding Surprises

I love the idea of the bride surprising the groom, or the groom surprising the bride, or the guests being surprised... or just about any sort of fun surprise on a wedding day!

Did any of you married ladies have surprises?  Any of the engaged ladies planning on having a surprise?  Have you ever been surprised as a guest?

I ask because I'm thinking of surprising everyone (well, except the two people who are going to help me pull it off).  I loooooooooove Georgetown Cupcakes (yeah, it's that shop on "DC Cupcakes" on TLC).  I've been going there literally since the day it opened, no joke, so way before it was famous.  FI and I went there a lot when we were living in DC.  When he was at OCS, I surprised him and his fire squad on one of their liberties with a dozen cupcakes, and once or twice while he was gone he had a friend pick up some cupcakes and bring them to me as a surprise to remind me he was thinking of me (and to keep me happy!).

So... it's just suiting that we have them at our wedding!  Except FI doesn't think we should since shipping would be too expensive.  True, true... but our Officiant (FI's much older cousin) and his partner just told me he was driving up from DC, and asked me if there was anything I wanted him to bring.  Well, since you asked!  And I ran the idea by him, and he thought it was great!

So I just asked Georgetown Cupcakes for an estimate, and hopefully it's within what I can afford (if it's the normal cost of their cupcakes, or hopefully less as a bulk order, then I'm fine).

So I'm hoping to have Georgetown Cupcakes at the wedding!!!!!  OMG I might scream from happiness!  And I am not going to tell anyone except the day-of coordinator and our officiant and his partner who are helping.

Our wedding cake was funfetti, which was a surprise to a lot of people and everyone loved it.

Also,we had fireworks at our wedding because they are set off in the area every Friday night anyways, so that was a surprise to a lot of people.  We obviously didn't pay for them, but it was definitely a selling point for having a Friday wedding there.

We surprised my father at my daughters rehearsal. DD asked him if he would do the father/daughter dance which we knew he would then travel the 1100 miles. He escaped Hungary in 1956 he was one of the freedom fighters  and came to the United States on a Military ship.

So for the rehearsal my daughter dresssed in my traditional Hungarian phesant dress and I made the hair ring. We didn;t let him know about it and he just cried when he saw her.He was so touched that we went out of our way to make it as traditional as we could for him. This was his first grandchild to be married and none of the others  plan on taking that route any time soon. He's 72 and not in the best of health.

Daughter talking about her dress and our hertitage.

One of the dances DD and he did(she changed out of the wedding gown to be cooler)

And the sheer happiness he showed in many pictures this one says it best

Stan - I'm curious (aka nosy), can you PM me it? Laughing

MOB - that is incredibly sweet and makes me want to cry!  That's really amazing that your daughter did that for her grandpa.  I know most brides wear expensive dresses to their rehearsal dinner, but that's so much more meaningful.

Dnbeach - I WANT FIREWORKS!!!!  So jealous!  That's really cool.

Cali,, you are correct most wont. I ran this by on another board a while back and found that out, but they were supoortive of the idea but they all said it wasn't for them to do something like that. My daughter has NO problem being different and going against the grain so to speak.

Stan-I saw a cake that was on TK earlier in the week. It was red, white, and blue beautiful  and it made me think of your up coming wedding! Smile

ETA: At my wedding my "Uncle" danced with me. He was a paratrooper in WWII, had his leg shot off and had a prosthetic leg. It was the first time he had ever danced since he lost his leg he surprised everyone that night. I will never forget that!

Well.  My FI and I love surprises.  We're always surprising eachothe so a wedding without a surprise just wouldn't do! LOL kidding... but really....
My bridesmaids and I are doing a dance (real original I know) but I danced FOREVER and surprisingly no one's expecting it... or they're playing it off like they're not.  But it will be to Boogie Shoes remixed with Party Rock Anthem...  Nobody knows except my bridesmaids and I.  We will be wearing glittery converse and my dress is a 2 in 1 dress so that will be another surprise! lol
But yes I love surprises, I'm sure there will be more.. No telling if or what FI is planning...

Calindi - I hope you can get the cupcakes! that would be awesome. :)

Mob - Those stories are so sweet and warms my heart.  Love it.

Sami - I would've wanted to play in the snow too! I love the snow!

I was surprised that a guest who appeared to be a 15 year old male was actually a 23 year old female...a cousin I hadn't seen in several years. Does that count? Oh and DH's uncle surprised us by paying for a night at a cabin on site. The cabin was really cool. The stairs to the loft were carved in to the flue for the fireplace.

So I'm sitting here reading this thread, and decided to ask FI if he had a surprise in store for me, as a joke. He says he has a few surprises in store for me, which shocks the helllll outta me! Oh man I have butterfiles! :)

Funfetti wedding cake sounds like the most amazing cake in the world!

...now I have to think up a surprise for my awesome guy! :)

We didn't really have any surprises, unless you count the fact that H never even saw our reception hall until the day before the wedding haha.

H isn't that good at surprises, and I get too excited about them so I want to tell him as soon as possible, sooooo we kind of suck at surprising each other :)

Oh gosh, my FI would never think of surprising me.  If I don't tell him to do it, he won't come up with it.  As soon as he has an idea, he tells me - like ggirl's H, my FI doesn't keep secrets well when he's excited!  It's going to be realllllly hard for me to keep from telling him about the cupcakes!

I never in a million years would have thought of him surprising me, either! So I'm really shocked! And it was funny cause I caught him so off guard! Totally made my night. Now I just have to keep myself from asking what it is so that I don't ruin it...

MOB- that is super awesome that your daughter did that. I have Hungarian relatives too, but none with the history that your family has!
