Jobs and PCSing

this is going to be a post and leave because we are going to go ride roller coasters!

For those who have PCS'd, when did you start the job hunt? Before or when you got there? If before, how early?

I honestly think it depends on what you are looking for.  If you are just looking for something like a receptionist, retail or server, I would wait until you get there.  If you are looking for something like a teaching position, if you are a nurse or anything that would require more than one interview, I would start looking as soon as you have orders.  Does that make sense?

I started looking several months before. However, my H was unique and had orders for 6 months before the PCS, since he had a TDY in between. I have def. picked up the pace since moving here, but the positions I was looking at are notoriously long selection process, multiple interviews and I was able to apply online.

I'm a teacher too, and after we got our orders here I applied for WA teaching certification.  Once i had that I started applying for jobs and looking online.  I knew even a couple months before coming that basically nobody was hiring (at least in my subject area), so I started looking for other jobs.  Two of my aunts own a franchise in NY of the company I work for here, and I had helped them out after I was laid off from my teaching job.  They called the office here to see if they were hiring, and basically it worked out perfectly that they were looking to hire a secretary type person right around the time I was moving here.

I know we are moving to VA in the spring, and I will start applying to switch my teaching ceritication soon.  I would at least get the process started and see what happens from there.

I started looking quite a few months before, which is how I ended up down here when he was still deployed. I would at least start looking and applying because many places do take a while.

I would ideally start looking before, rather than once your there - that way hopefully it's less time you have to wait between jobs. I know when we found out we were moving in July to FL (before I got my current job in Aug 2010) I had already started 'looking' - more or less keeping my eyes out for things. Thankfully I have a job in which I can bring it with me - no matter where we go. But I'm very aware it won't always be that way. I would really start applying to jobs about a month before moving for sure.

When I moved in with FI I kept my job until I wasn't getting enough hours. I started job searching before I even quit my other job. I started applying as soon as my hours got cut

Yes but teaching jobs aren't around as much as they used to be, especially in Georgia AND not to mention, in january.

I hope you don't take offence to this because of your back ground but have you tried applying for tutoring places. They might only be part time but at least its something. I'll send you a pm with the sites I used

I dont take offense to that. The only problem is that kids are in school during the day so I'd have to work evenings and this might sound counterproductive to the fact that I need a job but I don't want to work evenings. If I have to then it'd be something else. I'm looking for a 9-5 type job.

Could you start at something like that while you looked for something more suitable? <div>

I moved to NC in June, and started applying for teaching jobs as soon as I got here. And nothing. It totally sucked! The budget for NC teachers was cut and many were laid off, so finding a job was going to be tough. But I applied to nearly everything I saw. I mailed/hand delivered/emailed resumes, transcripts, license, and letters of recommendations. I was finally offered a job the week before school started.

Since you will be moving down in the middle of the school year, you could always look for substitute jobs, or volunteer in the schools, just so they know who you are, when the big hiring comes around in late spring/summer. Good Luck!!
