I was trying to see if this has been asked in the past, didn’t see anything so sorry if its a common topic already! Just direct me to the proper posts in that’s the case, please!!

So, my FI and I have decided to get married Fall 2012.  Originally we were thinking Spring/Summer 2012 but his temporary schedule is so crazy that its just smarter to avoid that entire time period.

I am in graduate school and working part time w/ no benefits.  Since I am 25, I can remain on my parents insurance until my birthday in November.  So that means I will be uninsured for about a year before we get married.  Going uninsured is not an option since I have asthma.  I know there are student insurances, but I wanted to see if any of you were/are in similar situations and have any suggestions??  Thanks!

I'm on what I call "catastrophic insurance" which is high deductible but low per month cost since I lost my job a few months ago. It's not ideal, but it's better than nothing, and it's actually pretty good insurance with pharmacy coverage and co-pays for PCP and specialists that isn't ridiculous.  For an estimate of what your options are, you can contact the lady who I used:

I'm in a similar situation.. Maybe contact your parents insurer and see what they recommend? Since your a current person on a plan with them, they might be willing to help out more?

My dad was Navy, so I can enroll in Tricare Student, but I'll only be uninsured for about 3 months or so, so I don't know if I am going to or not, or if I will just risk it. THe only thing I'm concerned about is my thyroid issue, it's under control now, but I do need medicine for it.

AMH - I'd recommend getting insurance because if you are not covered for more than 60 days, any conditions you have can be considered pre-existing.  With your thyroid issue, I'd say it's a must. 

My insurance is with Cigna and only costs $140/month, which isn't great but it doesn't bankrupt me.  I have a $2500 deductible, so I don't exactly want to use it, but at least I know it's there (and I did have a sudden unexpected medical condition come up that might just go past that deductible, so it turns out it may be useful after all).  I can go for preventative care visits for $40 for primary care co-pay and $60 for a specialist co-pay.  Certainly expensive, but again, it's better than paying out of pocket.  Generic prescriptions are only $15, which helps a lot!  And once I pass the deductible, I have 80% coverage.

Anyway, I figure it's worth it.

Look into your States Insurance. Minnesota Care, for instance, is pretty awesome insurance for the low fees. I was considering that for myself but you have to be uninsured for 4 months before they pick you up.

I think that since it's been diagnosed under Tricare Prime previously, and they have records of diagnosis and treatment and on going treatment from the time I was 16 that they can't deny me coverage for it or deny treatment options.
That's really not bad, they are trying to charge me $186 a month. I don't know, we'll see how it goes. I need to actually go to the Health Benefits office and see what they can do.
