Military Brides

Registry Ideas

So my Mate gave me the task of our wedding/shower registry because I have lived on my own longer (if sharing a studio apt a the university counts). I also cook more often and more elaborately than he ever did. All he asked is that the decorative stuff and linens- towels and bedding mostly- we do together.

Are there any items I should keep in mine or tips to creating a bridal registry that will set us up for success with frequent moves etc. i know that the kitchens on base are a bit small, but the living rooms and master bedrooms are a nice size :)

Another way to do this- Is there one item you have moved around a bit and you still love and use all the time?

The knot has a kind of helpful checklist of stuff to register for.. Also, Macy's has a checklist (thats where I registered, but our registry was teeny tiny) You know what you'll need better than TK, or Macy's does though.

We picked Fiestaware (in Cobalt and Scarlet) for our dishes because they aren't super expensive and I like to play around with color..

Just don't be a diva like Kim Kardashian!! Make sure that you have lower priced items (not just like a fork for $19.99), things that people can actually afford in addition to your higher priced things like kitchen mixers and punch bowls.  Think about what, if any, entertainig ya'll will do as a couple..

ETA: Fiestaware is heavy duty, I've dropped it on a countertop and on the floor and it didn't break, but even if it did break when we moved, we wouldn't have to Save up to replace it like with Fine China.

    HTH!! Good Luck!

My mom loves Fiesta. She has a five piece set of every color and lots of other dishes like casserole dishes, egg plates, etc.

My philosphy was that if I didn't see the value in it, I wouldn't put it in my registry.  Like I'd never spend $500 on a vase even if I had millions of dollars - I just don't see the value - so I wouldn't put it on my registry.  I can't ask people to buy me things that would be too expensive for me to feel comfortable using and risking breaking because I could never afford to replace them!  So about $50 is my cap for a vase, maybe (and just maybe) $150 for a really nice crystal one, but that's it.

We didn't register for china because we're afraid with all the military moves that we'll end up breaking pieces.

My favorite thing in the kitchen is our Cuisinart food processor.  Get a decent sized one - you can use it for EVERYTHING.  Love it!  And a slow cooker.  Hmm... a good set of knives is essential for quality cooking.  A nice cutting board.  We registered for that fancy $300 standing mixer, but that was mostly FI's doing - he wants the sausage attachment so we can make our own sausages without nitrates or preservatives.  Hmm... a good set of pots & pans?  We have the 17-piece Cuisinart set that we got at Sam's Club for $130 for Christmas last year (thanks Mom & Dad) and we LOVE it!  Maybe some Pyrex for baking?

We registered at Bed Bath & Beyond and Crate & Barrel.  We also did a very small registry at Williams Sonoma since we've been told it makes it MUCH easier to return anything that may be bought for you from there - you don't need a receipt, just add the item to your registry and then return it. We also found this fantastic glass artist who makes beautiful serving dishes and pitchers and such and we're adding her website to our wedding website in the hopes that some people will buy some items for us!

We registered at Macy's and Bed, Bath, and Beyond.  My advice would be to register for both lower priced and higher priced items, that way there is kind of something for everyone's budget on your registry.  Also, we kept our registry pretty basic.  We put some appliances on there, like toaster oven and coffee makes, but we didn't really go crazy with china or crystal stemware or any of that (which would get easily damaged in a move).  At the end of it, we ended up with so many gift cards to Macy's and Bed, Bath, and Beyond that we've been able to buy the rest of the items that we've found out we needed, and still have gift cards left over to use in the future!  It turned out that a lot of people opted to give us money instead of buying things for our registry, which was good for us, since we will probably be moving around a lot.  We're putting a bunch of that money to save up for a down payment on a house ( a small start, but a start nonetheless).  Best of luck to you!

We did Macy's and BBB. We had about 75 items on each. We kept it small because we wanted cash for things we needed after/during our move. My favorite item was our Fiestaware Dishes. Such an awesome buy. I inherited my mom's set and they have lastest over 10 years and they look brand new.

H added some emergency kits since we are moving to an area that experiences a lot of bad weather. That was something I would have never thought about.

I also registered us for some things for our Dog. Like a travel bed and grooming kit.

A knottie on my local board use to work for a kitchen supply company. She was able to help me find the best pots and pans for our money and need.

I would try to keep as many original boxes as you can. (I kept the  box for my 32 in TV) which makes it SOOO much easier to move. Yes it took up half my closet but it was worth it IMO,

    HTH
