Crossfit: Day 1

So FI signed me up for Crossfit.  I've said I would never do it, but I've moped and groaned about being overweight and not feeling good about myself right now, so he opted to pay for the first few months to get me hooked.  Well, I do love it, but man I hate it!  Haha!

What do you do for workouts?  What's the hardest work out routine you've ever done?  What has worked and what hasn't worked for you?

I think this might actually work for me - I only have to go 3x per week, in 2 months I'll build that up to 4x per week.  It lasts approximately an hour, maybe a little less.  I'll still keep running, though probably only 2x per week.  So really, that's only 6 hours of working out per week - totally manageable!  And I feel so darn good after the workouts, and the soreness actually is a good thing - I like being a little sore since I know I actually did something.  The key is going to be to not get discouraged since I'm just ridiculously behind most of the people at the gym, and I hate being the one where all the coaches come over and go, "You okay?  Do you need to take a break?"  I like being good at things, darn it, and I'm really bad at this right now!

Crossfit is a blast! Do you guys live on or near a base? I'm just asking because you mentioned paying for the classes, and we get them for free at the base. I'm a Physical Training Leader for my unit so I LOOOOVE different workouts and I'm always trying new things ( I get bored easily!) I'd say, make sure you enjoy the activity you're doing and switch things up every now and again to avoid getting bored or hitting a plateau. Try different activities and you'll find what works best for you!

I've done spinning, cardio kick boxing, p90x, crossfit, power pump, just plain running, created my own circuits, played/coached soccer, and right now I'm training for a Half Marathon. After the HM, i'll probably switch to just weights, since I love to toned results it gives me!

    Best of luck to you!

Wow, for free?  I think my FI would wet himself if there was free Crossfit on a base where he was stationed.  Right now he's inactive reserves while he finishes law school, so we're boring old civilians for another year.  FI has been a member of this gym for 2 years now, so they gave him a great deal on the family plan.  But adding me still cost $75 per month!!!  That's two mani/pedis, so it better be worth it! :-)

What's the goal time for the half marathon?  Which half, may I ask?  I'm running the Disney Princess in February, which I did this past year!  I'm a total turtle, slow as can be, but I only started running less than a year ago so it's a process.  I finished last year's Disney Princess Half in 3:18, and I'd like to be under 3 hours this year.

I like the concept of Crossfit but not the cult lifestyle they try to push you into at their gyms.  J's unit has a CF type gym that spouses can use.  I went with him a few times to learn how to use the equiptment and now just go up there when I can.  It's free.

I dont' know, on our base it's so not the same as a gym. They have the equipment of course, but what I loved about my gym was seeing everyone and doing everything together as a group and the team atmosphere.

    I miss my gym :(

Lulu, I don't think they'd let you do it right now!  Some light weights and cardio, sure, but that crazy Crossfit stuff?  Not for you, beautiful pregnant lady!  How is everything? Turns out my cousins are expecting, and they're only a few weeks less pregnant than you!  So I'm really excited to see the progress on both sides.  It's their second child, and she's already showing!  Which is hilarious because it took until 7 months for anyone to notice the first time.

I do like the team atmosphere, but I get what iluvmytxrgr is talking about with cult mentality - my FI definitely bought into that one.  He started doing intense Paleo diet, which they push.  We've toned it down to a level where we're both comfortable - cutting out grains, but being a bit more lenient with dairy and salt and vinegar.  But I like having the coaches there paying attention to each student to make sure you have good form so you don't hurt yourself!

I will have to google Crossfit because I have never heard of it!

Right now my main work out is Zumba! I try to go at least twice a week. It's so much fun because not only am I working out but also learning dance moves. H loves it too!

I'm a runner too but I haven't ran since getting back to Vegas because of the heat, it's just too much to be outside and I am not a gym member. I haven't joined one because I am always travelling so it's not worth it for me. When I get back to Japan I am planning on running again, and H will try to go with me, between the 2 of us he really is the runner.(All State track and X Country). They also have Zumba on base for much cheaper, so I will go there too. And gym membership is also free so maybe I'll start doing weights.

Btw C, $75 for 2 mani/pedis? I just got mine done yesterday and paid that much, so that's a deal!

Yeah, not the best mani/pedi, totally the cheapo Vietnamese (and Cuban - hey, it's Miami) nail ladies, but $32 for a mani/pedi on Monday & Tuesdays.

I also have been the suck at running this summer - Miami heat?  No thank you!  When I went out to LA to visit a friend, I ran every single day because it was so much fun.  And I ran most of a half marathon with a friend of mine two weekends ago in Rhode Island (just hopped the course and ran for about 8 miles) in the pouring rain, which was great!  Why won't this heat and humidity go away?!

Never heard of it before either. I tend to try to kill myself while working out! I don;t "ease" into it I "dive" into it. The last time I tried I honestly think I was close to death and have been scared ever since! The time before that I would do the treadmill(wieghtloss) 3 min at an incline and 3 min flat. did that for an hour(listening to zydeco music), then every other day I would do weights which I LOVE/d! I eventually worked myself up to add 45 min. of the stair master. I lost a lot! and also watched carefully what I ate. I cut out ALL carbs, butter and salt I don't drink carbonated drinks so I wasn't having to cut that out. I loved my noodles, bread, potatoes and rice I thought I was in hell<img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-undecided.gif" border="0" alt="Undecided" title="Undecided" />. Thank goodness I had a lot of fresh seafood, that saved me!

Good luck! You will feel amazing! I worked out after dinner that way I would know not to over eat, went to the gym worked out sweated came home showered and went to bed totaly exhausted. I couldn't wait to get up the next morning because I felt like a new person each time!

GL with crossfit! I know lots of folks who are into it... they love it, but only hang out with "crossfit people". Not sure if it's the peer accountability for the paleo diet or what.

Definitely too regimented for me I think. I like to run and swim, those are the only things I can do and stick with that help me lose weight and keep it off. With this PCS keeping me busy, I haven't worked out in 3 weeks until today. I did okay, but felt weaker lifting and definitely felt my muscles screaming in protest when I ran... Should be out of that phase by next week hopefully.

In the meantime I'm making pumpkin choc chip cookies... nom nom....

</div><div>Yeah, for free, but right now we're in Cincinnati, too far from Wright Patt, so FI pays for the gym membership and I just use the outdoors plus our weights at home.  He only has 15lbs, 30lbs, and 60lbs dumbells and we have a pullup bar in our doorway so I use what i've got! I'm surprised I can use those weights, and with proper form! We used to do Crossfit for some of our unit PT sessions and I miss it! </div><div>
</div><div>I'm training for the Air Force Half Marathon and FI is doing the full. My goal is somewhere between 2:15 and 2:45 , but we'll see! I kinda just wanna do it to FINISH it <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-smile.gif" border="0" alt="Smile" title="Smile" />  I soooo wanna do the Disney HM! I've seen it in my Runners World Mag and it looks like it's tons of fun! Are you training for it yet? I'd never run more than 4 miles until training for this. (Those 4 miles were while I was deployed in the desert...talk about no scenery and super hot temps!) Anyways, GL with everything!</div><div> I dunno why but I just love working out (not in some super crazy psycho way). We have a toddler and she sometimes gets into the pilates moves with me at home (too cute!) the other times are pretty much for the "me time", which is MUCH NEEDED! LOL</div><div>

H swears by Crossfit & Running, and I'm fairly certain he could live off of grilled chicken and brown rice.  I am terrified to try it, and I like beef, seafood, pasta, fruit, veggies, CookOut.. Ben & Jerry's Phish Food fro-yo (I'm bad I know..)

I work at Curves, and I absolutely ADORE my job. I Love the members, and since I started working there we've seen a huge increase in "younger" members.  Curves is so stereotypically a gym for "Old Ladies", so it's great to get some younger members in!! All the older members call me "the little girl", even though they know my name, and I wear a name tag!

Anyway, Curves international (I had no idea that Curves was an international company before I started working there) says that for Curves to "work" you should do the circuit 3x's a week for 30 minutes, and follow their weight management plan.  I usually end up doing it 3x's per shift, because I won't ever let someone work out alone, plus when we get new members I work out with them and train them on the machines.  Today alone I did the circuit 21 times.  I also run, though not as often as I should (maybe 2-3 times a week.. maybe).  I finished my 2nd 5K this past weekend though and I'm pretty proud of my improvement!! And I follow the Niger carb version of the weight management plan.. My huge weakness though, is sweet tea.  That stuff is like crack! I can't get enough!! I get super grumpy when I don't have any.. I need to cut back..

I need to google Crossfit too! I know I've heard of it but never seen it--sort of crazy circuit stuff? I started lifting heavy weights, which I'm really loving. Both thighs are already smaller.  And I'm a pilates instructor so that's always in my back pocket.

I used to run but I realized there is nothing in this world I hate more so I stopped. What am I trying to prove?? There are other ways to burn calories. There's my moment of zen. Laughing

My FI doesn't just hang out with Crossfit people, but he's definitely passionate about it.  I call him the Crossfit prophet because he's brought about a dozen people to join his gym so far.  Which I think is why they were willing to cut him a break to add me to his plan.

I don't plan on following strict paleo ever, but I wouldn't mind making some new friends!  I don't currently hang out with anyone really down here - there are 3-4 buddies I have who I see once a month or so, but I get pretty bored when FI's busy so it would be nice to at least have a gym to go to or some new friends to call.  So that would actually be a plus for me!

I made gourmet mac & cheese while FI was gone this weekend.  It was om nom nom good!
