Thanks. I will definitely be looking for help for locations to look for houses. We want a decent area, kind of between the 2 bases. I had heard Chesapeake and Williamsburg, then I heard they were too far away. I want to be in a good area though.

Chesapeake wouldn't be too bad to commute to Norfolk, but I think it would be a little bit too far to commute to Newport News. Williamsburg is not even part of Hampton Roads and is probably the farthest from any of the bases in the area.

Chesapeake is an awesome place to live but its also one of the more expensive (besides the oceanfront at least!)

Virginia Beach is great you just have to make sure that you are in a good area!

Thanks. Yeah that's what I heard about Williamsburg too. I got some recs from MN too. I'm sure when it gets closer to actually look and talk to a realtor I'll be asking for lots of info!

I am a Business major and I work in a formal wear store. Some things have changed around a bit so I will be staying here after the wedding and finishing school....I hate my major so it may take longer than planned.
Ohh Beachy you don't really want to get rid of your student loan debt do you? I mean I LOVE mine. Anyway, I have a masters in school counseling/community mental health counseling. I was working as an addictions counselor but since I moved I will be starting a new job as an adolescent mental health counselor.
    Posted by ggirl2001
ggirl -- how did you like being an addictions counselor? And what made you transition into working with adolescents?

I work as a nanny and am also in grad school for substance abuse counseling..I go back and forth about what direction I want to go once I complete my schooling. My bachelor degree is in psychology, which I absolutely loved. But I do love working with children and I make decent money as a nanny...it's nerve-wracking not knowing just what I want to do with my life. And at the same time I'll be bouncing around from place to place with the military so that adds some stress.

E-Addictions counselor was my first job after grad school so thats how I got started there. Honestly, I loved it because you can see the changes people make after 8 months of working with them, you don't get that kind of dramatic change with severely mentally ill clients. When you see someone come in that has lost their job, about to lose their marriage etc and when you work with them and they complete successfully you see all the positive changes.

Why I went to kids: well, I applied for the job, it was a state job and they hired me lol. Actually I wanted to work with children before that but I didn't get a job in NYS for it. I went to eventually get back in the school system. My undergrad degree is in teaching and I feel like the background I will have with the teaching and counseling would make me an effective school counselor. I'm nervous about this job though because i haven't worked with adolescents since my masters internships.

I make jewelry and read in my spare time. I help my dad run his bookstore, but other than that and my etsy store, I am currently unemployed. It's so hard finding a job out in the middle of nowhere Vermont. :(

I'm currently working at a drycleaner in town. I have an associates in respiratory care and a bachelors in health care administration. I'm applying to be a health care admin officer in the Army Reserves and hope to go active or at the very least active reserve eventually.

Lol, there seems to be something backwards about being a healthare person working for a dry cleaners... don't they have to use really nasty bad-for-you chemicals??

I'm not certain on if the chemicals are bad for you. I only press the clothes lol so I guess that's about the same as if I were a SM wearing the freshly dry cleaned uniform.
Melbelle, at least you're getting to the good part! Do third years get to see patients? We always have med students around the hospital I'm at but I never ask what year they are...
    Posted by SarahP787
Yes, third years get to see patients. I start on clinicals in 3 weeks... It's scary and exciting all at the same time!

On another note, it's interesting to see what a wide variety of career choices the girls on here have! This board was a great and fun idea!

That's awesome, that's how I feel when thinking about heading in that direction. I love working with people and I've primarily worked with young children and teens, so it's a little daunting thinking about counseling adults. I toy with the idea of working in the substance abuse counseling centers within the military, I know (very unfortunately) there's certainly no shortage of SM with substance abuse problems. Good luck in your new position!
