Military Brides

Cake in a jar.

So, my FI has been bugging me about making cake in a jar and sending it in a care package for him. All he wants is some funfetti cake! Have any of you made it? I'm worried it will taste horrible by the time it gets there.

I've googled it and found a few different ways to make it but have any of you ladies done it and been successful? Thanks for any input!

I tried it and it didn't last any longer than 2 weeks. I made a batch at home to test it. If mail is being delivered by convoy, I wouldn't be totally comfortable with it.

I've heard a few horror stories about botulisim poisoning from it. If he really wants it tell him to be careful and make sure it smells/looks okay before he eats it but otherwise I wouldn't send it. I'm a bit of a worry wart like that though.

    Yes!!  I made it!

I sent it to FI for his birthday.  I made yellow cake and sent a few different tubs of chocolate icing.

He LOVED it and said it tasted great... very fresh.

I'm a huge fan and will make it again in the future.

I just made the batter according to the directions and then put it in the jars and baked them until a toothpick inserted came out clean.  While they're baking, you boil the lids.  When they come out of the oven, put the lids on and wait for them to "pop"

    Tips:
It will bake cleaner if there's not any cake batter mess at the rim/top of the jar... try to pour it cleanly into the bottom of the jar.

Get shorter wide mouth jars that are straight (that don't curve in at the top) to make it easy for the cake to pop out when opened.

Super easy and a ton of fun!!  I also sent party hats, plates, etc to make it a "birthday in a box", so you can really add some "bling" Smile

I did it.  I was worried because they took 3 weeks to get to him.  He said they were awesome. He said he was worried because of the time, too.  He said he opened them and they smelled fine and looked ok.  He said he took a bite and they were good.  I sent a box of 6, so he shared them with some of the guys.  He has asked for them again this deployment.

Ahh yay thank you! I'm excited to try it. Mail takes about 2-3 weeks to get there so it's nice to know he'll get them and they'll taste good. :)

I did it too and it was a lot easier than I thought it was going to be. I made yellow cake for FI's birthday and sent some store-bought chocolate icing. He was so impressed and said they tasted great. He did have some trouble opening the jars (so did I... I kept a couple jars to "test" them) so I was fairly confident they'd be fresh enough. I had to stab holes in the lids to open the damn things!
