Friday (the 13th)!!

Good morning ladies! Anyone up besides me? There are some fierce winds outside that woke me, and now Binx is keeping me awake by forcing me to pet him (you know, how if you stop petting, animals shove their head into your hand)! Typing and petting is difficult!

Fun facts about Friday the 13th:

The fear of Friday the 13th is called friggatrishtkaidekaphobia (Frigga being the name of the Norse goddess for whom "Friday" is named and triskaidekaphobia meaning fear of the number thirteen)

According to the Stress Management Center and Phobia Institute in Asheville, North Carolina, an estimated 17 to 21 million people in the United States are affected by a fear of this day. Some people are so paralyzed by fear that they avoid their normal routines in doing business, taking flights or even getting out of bed. "It's been estimated that $800 or $900 million is lost in business on this day". Despite this, representatives for both Delta and Continental Airlines say that their airlines do not suffer from any noticeable drop in travel on those Fridays.

I'm not superstitious, clearly, as I own a black cat and cross his path on a regular basis! And my FI was born on a Friday the 13th, and today is his birthday! So I should hardly consider it unlucky!

So are you superstitious? Are you avoiding doing anything today because of the date? Do you have any other superstitions?

I'm up Binx.  I'm at workFrown  I love my job, but it's really hard to do when I still don't feel well..  I'm feeling better than I was on Wednesday (though not a lot), but still not 100%.

The only thing that I'm superstitious about is so silly and lame and H makes fun of me for it, but whenever I drive past a cemetery (I don't ever walk past them..) I hold my breath.  My Grandma always told me that if you breathe in when you pass a cemetery that you can inhale a spirit thus becoming possessed.  Or if you don't hold your breath a spirit will take it from you.  So lame and silly, but it's more out of habit than anything now.  Apparently it's a real thing though and it kind of has it's own phobia too! Placophobia is the fear of cemeteries and/or headstones.

Thanks for this Binxy! I'm off to wikipedia superstitious stuff!!

ETA: I'm sorry for being so whiney about not feeling good.. I need to stop.

  • I don't really have any superstitions, per say, but I do have a pair of lucky earrings that I wear anytime I feel like I need a bit of luck, like a job interview or something.  I want to wear them on my wedding day, but my Mom keeps insisting they're a pair I wear all the time so I need something fancier.

Sam, I used to hold my breath going through tunnels!  I do think I follow a few superstitions simply because it's tradition, but I can't remember which.

No wonder my day is off to a bad start. I overslept, couldn't find my keys, found out my winshield was iced over when I did find my keys, found out no one had an ice scraper, had to run to my cousins house for babysitting in 28 degree weather and snow. Fortunately my cousin's house is only a mile away and the baby is still asleep. He's teething and cranky so his sleep schedule is off. I'm not actually very superstitious. However, I believe the more prepared I am for something the less likely it is to happen in some cases. This being for negative things. Example: I came fully prepared to spend the entire summer in PA as a civilian lol. Like that will help me get in OCS. I know I'm ridiculous.

  • Hi everyone!

Thanks for the facts Binxy! I'm not superstitious per say. I do hold my breath through tunnels and pick up my legs over railroads.

This isn't the same but I always think in worst case scenarios. That way, when something that isn't the worst happens, I'm fine. I like to plan ahead with worst case so that I can make a plan if needed. Weird right?

  • Binx: your FI has the same birthday as my SIL!! She was all worried today is Friday the 13th. Lol I do believe in quite a bit of superstitions. I think they came from my mom and grandparents. Filipinos have many superstitions. My mom used to always tell us to be careful kn Friday the.13th. We tend not to travel this day too. There have been occurences in the past when something bad would happen.. Sorry for the misspells. I am typing on my Kindle.
  • Sami- my "fun facts" came from wiki haha! I used to hold my breath going by cemetaries when I was younger.

Cali- wear them! They seem to have a sentimental value to them. I think that's more important than wearing brand new earrings just to "look fancy."

Sammy- props for running a mile in the cold!

  • Good morning! :) I consider 13 my lucky number lol...so I love this day. Happy Birthday to your FI Binx! As for superstitions....well I come from a Hispanic family. LMAO. I can't even count how many times my grandmother has pushed some of the silliest superstitions on me. Like, if a woman doesn't eat what she craves during pregnancy then her baby will always have their mouth open. (wth?...I think that's just an excuse to eat everything.) OR, the whole "Ojo" deal (which I kinda sorta believe in even though it makes almost no sense lol)...I always try to explain things with logic to myself, so I have to try not to be superstitious. :P
  • Good Morning - Happy Birthday to your FI Binx!

I think those are some neat facts! Thanks for sharing! I'm not really supersitious or anything. I do hold my breath when traveling in tunnels and pick my legs up over railroads - but I never really knew why, just sort of did. The holding my breath in a tunnel thing is more of a game for me, rather than any superstition, I wonder where that whole idea came from... I might need to google that.

My day is off to a decent start. Got a good work out in despite the puppy wanting to eat my hair during the ab part. We have our construction company out to fix a tile and fix the grout in the shower today (thank goodness for home warranty's!) Other than that it's a pretty normal day, although the temperature has seemed to drop a good 20 degrees over night! But I'm really hoping for a good day today.

OH MY GOSH!!! I thought I was the only person to ever do that.  HAAA I have quite a few that I do.

Per my Nana (this is where all of these come from):

*I never wash clothes on New Years Day.  The thought is you will be washing clothes for a funeral that same year of someone close to you.  Hey why risk it right.

*I always through salt over my sholder if it spills.

*If you think someone called your name but there is no one around, say a quick prayer as it is the devil calling out to.

*Itching hand means you will be getting money soon.  Ok that one never works. HAA

*Itching nose means you are going to kiss a fool or company is coming.

*If you have a random shiver that means a rabbit just ran over your grave. (Nana changed it from rat to rabbit.) HAA

There are many more that Nana used to say.  I am not sure where they came from except she tolds us her grandmother told her.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane Binx!
  • I’m not really superstitious; I tend to think very logical, so it is a little silly to believe that a black cat is going to bring me “luck” good or bad.  But, I confess, I do tend to wear the same shirt for football games…and I when they lose and I am not wearing my lucky shirt…it is all my fault.  HAHA.

Crown - My hand has been itching lately…. WHERE is my moneeeyyy??

I’m so jealous; FIs parents are visiting FI this weekend….I wish I could hide in their luggage, I could fit just fine. I think he is taking them to see St Augustine… and I just love St Augustine.

  • Crown I don't like the washing clothes on New Years Day one. I definitely did that!

  • I don't think I have any superstitions but I just wanted to say to Amanda, I LOVE St. Augustine! It's a beautiful place and they have the yummiest Polish restuarant by the Castillo de San Marcos. :)
