Huh, silly boot camp question.

A coworker of mine is leaving for boot camp in June. He was telling me he's trying to wean himself off coffee and cigarettes before then. Now, barring any judgment on the actual addictions and obvious health implications, what were your/your SO's experiences with this? I didn't think they forbade either, though I have zero personal experience with boot camp. I guess it doesn't matter either way, but now I'm curious. Do you think he "has to" give up either?

Re: Huh, silly boot camp question.

  • I don't know about boot camp but I would think that he would want to give up smoking just because of all of the stuff they do at boot camp (work out wise).

When I decided to start running, I quickly stopped smoking.  I was able to quit cold turkey because I felt like I was going to vomit and my lungs were going to explode when I was running.  Although, I always ask H when I see people on post smoking how in the hell can they do all of that PT stuff and still smoke.  He says that he sees people finish a 12 mile road march and light up.

Yeah, thats what I told him, but at this point, his fitness level is what it is....I think he was more worried about getting yelled at for that stuff? I'm not sure. Haha. I've seen military friends do the same thing your H said, so nasty.

  • Yeah it so is.  I just don't understand how they can run and do the PT test and then light up.  I think I would cough up my lung.  HAA.  Yeah I don't know about getting yelled at.  I would quit because of fear of vomit not getting yelled at. HAAA

    No cigarettes.... for sure.

But I know you can drink coffee, according to H it tasted terrible.

ETA - this is for Navy, other branches are probably different.

  • I know Marines had no cigarettes definitely. Not sure about coffee but for some reason I think that wasn't allowed either?

  • I would just drop out if there's no coffee. That's just silly.

  • No cigarettes but DH, his cousin, and a friend of ours all got coffee. All went to different branches. I've heard it sucks though.

Yea, that is really silly, I did a google search... (God Love Google) and apparently some branches you can't have it... I can see no soda, but no coffee? That is weird.

I know at Navy basic you could have coffee, probably no starbucks...I believe H referred to it as " Caffeine Water"

  • When I went through Army boot camp (16 years ago LOL), neither was allowed.  Smoking I know is still not allowed but I'm not sure about coffee.  I know we weren't allowed to have it initially in OCS 2 years ago either (only allowed caffeine after 5 or 6 weeks).  I could be wrong, but I believe the main reason trainees aren't allowed to have coffee is because it can be a diuretic and when you're going through that much physical training, there's more risk of a heat injury.  Rare, but it's there I suppose.  Only in OCS was it not allowed becasue it was considered a "privilege."  Stupidest shiit ever if you ask me.  :/

  • FI was in the DEP program for a year before leaving for boot, and in that year he quit smoking and dipping so he could be more physically fit and be able to run easier in order to prepare for the 13 weeks of boot. After he graduated, he said they had no cigarettes (pretty obvious on that one) and he never had coffe in those 13 weeks. I think, like one PP said, they had something like "caffeine water" instead of actual coffee. Yuck.

  • FI brought his cigarettes to PI, thinking he'd have one last light up before he started, but no such luck.  They start disciplining you the minute you step on that bus.

He said it wasn't a problem for him, though.  There was so much other stuff going on that he didn't even notice withdrawal.  Then his stupid arse lit back up after 13 weeks, and smoked for another 10 years.  Fortunately now he's smoke-free going on 3 years, and I may or may not have promised him a threesome on his 3-year anniversary without smokes.  Let's just say I'm going to have to get him to start again before he reaches double-digits.
  • II went to Army Basic Training.  I'm not sure how different the rules are for him.  We weren't allowed any tobacco product.  We were also allowed no caffine.  As a matter of fact, the only thing we were allowed to drink was water or milk with our breakfast.  When it was hot, we could get Gatorade after we drank a glass of water.
I would encourage him to break away from both.  I had caffine and cigarette withdrawls at Basic.  The headaches were hell.  Getting past that now will make it easier on him later.

  • BCT oh 6 years ago there was no smoking, all the smokers on my plane destroyed a pack a peice while we waited to be picked up by the bus at the airport.  I can't remember if there was coffee at the chow hall but they do have coffee packets in the MRE's that you get ALOT.  People would warm up canteen water to make a cup out of those.

I'm pretty sure the no smoking thing is still in effect for boot camp, AIT it depends on your down time you can smoke your life away or atleast we could?

  • Went to Air Force basic a year ago, and neither was allowed. I was a coffee-junkie before I left, I went cold-turkey 3 months (when I finally got my shipping date) before basic.

I do seem to remember it being hell, but that was likely highly influenced by the ridiculous nonsense I was putting up with at home.
