Hero's at Home

What are your opinions on the Sear's Hero's at Home program? Do you participate in it?

Personally we don't - for a number of reasons.
Firstly, At his last command we were told that we weren't supposed to accept anything given to them for their service. So I wouldn't do anything in which he could get in trouble for. And  secondly, In my eyes , I know we don't need the money, -especially when there are others that need it more than us - like families with 6 kids, or injured veterans or families whose SO is deployed and I just don't feel right taking it. I also don't think its fair that we are 'given' money just because my FI is in the Navy - it's his job. They don't give money to others because of their job. There are plenty of others like firefighters and police officers that 'lay their life down on the line' and they aren't given money - at least that I'm not aware of. I appreciate the gesture and that they are trying to show their appreciation but I just don't think it's right. So I choose not to participate in it. I know others do, and I'm glad they are able to use that money, I just wouldn't feel right taking it.

--not trying to create a scene or anything just wanted to see what everyone else thinks of it -- i hope this doesn't cause an uproar or anything Embarassed

Honestly, I've never heard of the program, but then again I don't shop at Sears that often. I agree with you though, I don't think it's fair to be "given" money for doing the job you're hired (or trained) to do. I know being military is a little different then filling out a job application and getting hired, but still, same concept.

I haven't heard of the program either.. do you have a linky we can read?
Sear's treated my mom like CRAP so we kinda have a grudge against them anyway...
But agreed that we don't take anything people give us minus the "military discount" from time to time.

I think this link explains it: http://heroes.sears.com/faq.html

From what I understand, through friends, is that Sear's sends you out so many gift cards that total up to $300 to military members to use for their Christmas shopping.

That's exactly how I am - I guess because although it's a military discount - I'm still paying for the service/clothes/food. And plenty of places offer discounts for firefighters/police/teachers (BWW does teachers I believe) so it isn't just military members getting a discount. Plus I think of military discounts.. like I think of coupons :)

I can tell you as  Police Officer, if the program existed for us we would not be able to accept it. Legally, we can't even accept a free cop of coffee. The reason behind the law,  is that it would create favoritism among Cops and/or if word spread then the place of business would benefit from "free protection" because who the heck is gonna cause trouble at a cop hang out. KWIM?

We also do not participate in the program. Personally, my H and I are perfectly comfortable on just his salary while I am inbetween jobs. I agree if we were in need then it would be a different story. Our philosophy has always been save it for those who need it.

Well, I didn't even know it existed, but I know that H and I wouldn't use it.

However, if I'm reading it correctly, it appears that anyone who registers will get the gift card correct, so technically you wouldn't be taking from anyone. Again, not saying we would do it, but it appears that they plan to give it to anyone who registers, not just picking a select few or discounting others because they didn't register in time.

But I agree, that there are others who risk their lives who don't get honored like this such as firemen and police. But I"m biased as my brother is a fireman and my other brother a sheriff :) So I think they should get honored :) haha

I really agree with this statement. I don't feel like they get honored or even thanked enough for what they do.
