S/O Baby Names

Re: S/O Baby Names

  • edited December 2011
I used to think of names when I was younger, but haven't recently because we most likely will not be having children.

Being in the medical field I see a lot of unique names with patients though. A set of twins were named Orangello and Limongello. I've seen a Pepper Ann Salt.
Someone mentioned Adam Adams. We've had some Johnny Johnsons and Tommy Thompsons.

My parents, brothers, and I all have the same middle name. Growing up I thought that was how every family was. Mine is spelled differently but I really like that my parents did that, it is something we all share. Other than genes.

I don't think I'd name my child with a common name. Ashley, Jessica, John, Michael etc. The only exception is that FI is a Jr. If we had a child I don't know his feelings on calling him David as well. We've never talked about it.
I have such a typical "Southern" Name.. But I'm named after my dad's parents. My Grandma's maiden name was Sampson, and my Grandpa always called her Sammy, and his name was Joe, so I'm Samantha JoeAnne. I really want the Jo(e) as a middle name since it's kind of like a family name. It's mine, my dad's, both my grandfathers, & great grandfathers (on my dad's side) way back before they even immigrated to the US. H gets frustrated because I like "weird" names. I really don't think Harper is that odd (and To Kill a Mockingbird is one of my all time favorite books). I like names like Grayson & Jackson, but since our last name ends with son, it would sound funny. Brie and Barrett Jane (after Elizabeth Barrett Browning the poet & and Jane Eyre & Jane Austen) are my favorites for a girl. H and I Loooovve Alexander & Alexandria. I can come up with a million names for girls, but not that many for boys, especially after H said No to Scout and Atticus
    Posted by SamiJoeB
I was very nearly a "Scout". My mom read TKAM while she was pregnant with me and really wanted to name me that, but I think my dad vetoed it. Sad. I think I would have liked that name. I hate the name I ended up with.

We're not sure whether we plan on having kids, but since names are always fun to think about, we like Juliet for a girl and Gabriel (Gabe) for a boy.

I don't like "trendy" names. My friend has a younger brother named Casen and I think it just sounds made up.

I'm right there with you! James would work, too. I'd like Patrick, but it won't work as my family already has too many of them.

Funny - I'm marrying a humongous Italian/German/general European mutt. There goes my purebreed Irish kids! But he's got blonde hair and green eyes, so they'll still be freaking adorable! I'm just grateful that they've at least got a 50/50 chance on getting some height - FI is 6'3" and I'm the tallest girl in my family at a staggering 5'4"!

FTL: Speaking of guys who want porn actress/stripper names, I had an ex whose last name was Wood, and he wanted to name his daughter Jade. Jade Wood. So very "Gentlemen, please welcome to the Pink Slipper stage..."

FI's family have this thing where every firstborn son's first name starts with a "B", because their last name starts with a "B." Unfortunately, FI's is just about the only "B" name I like, so we're probably changing the tradition. Right now, leading the pack in boys are John "Jack" Leonard (because "Jack" with FI's last name makes him sounds like a WW1 flying ace or a noir detective) and Henry with Costello or Hart as the middle name.

Girl-wise, we're looking at Joan-Inez (grandmother's name) with Alice or Alison, Catherine "Kitty" Beatrice (FI loves the name Kitty his-last-name, sounds very old school), and Eleanor/Elizabeth Dale. I'm a little obsessed with names, I also love G/Jemma, Rose, Alma, and Iris. My Dad's Mom is named Gladys Leila, and I love her, but she doesn't really like her name, so I don't know if she'd love having a kid with her name.

I don't believe there's any kid named Le-a, and I agree with Snopes that it seems like a racist made it up.

We do have baby names, they were agreed upon prior to engagement. Truman for a boy and Adlai for a girl (after the President and the Ambassador). All of our kids will have my last name as middle names, awful as it may be. That's just how we roll, we're British.

I would never use the name Jesse, and it's my nephew's name anyhow. I dated a guy with that name, and while I have no ill will toward him, the entire time we were together, I called him Spano in my head. That's pretty much the only one. FI's exes are few, and one of them has the same name as me. I call her "Evil Stan", lol. A lot of my exes have names that they share with people I like, so they're canceled out.

    Fun topic!

My husband's family has naming rules. :/ All boys will have a first name that starts with an "R." Middle name will start with the initial of the mother's first name. All girls will be reversed. So all my boys will have the initials RAF, and my girls will be ARF. Here's the kicker- no repeats, and no juniors. :/ SO, what do you think that leaves me with? Practically nothing. All the good names have been taken and I refuse to name my son some crazy ethnic-sounding name (ie Rahkeim). :P I'm pretty sure I can get him to go with a "repeat" if we have to- rather than break this centuries old family tradition. LOL

I'm just happy we're having a girl right now. She's going to be Alexis Renee. :)

I have the same issue with my name believe it or not. People always called me 'annie'.. last i checked there isnt an I in my name - idiots.
I love all the names you ladies are thossing around! I like some of the gender neutral names, especially because it allows the child to kind of make it their own - like they don't have this super long fancy name to grow into - if that makes sense.
I love hunter I think it's such a cute name, same for Holden. I really liked colby for either a boy or a girl but erik said no. I can't really think of any others at the moment.

TeamBaby - Alexis Renee is an adorable name! I really, really like it! I can't wait to see the little darling. How's the pregnancy going?

Stan - I swear to you, I was skeptical, too, about La-a. It was my roommate in college's Mom who was a teacher who told us a girl in her class had that name. I said no way, so she emailed me a copy of her class roster. Sure enough... I mean, I have no proof it wasn't pronounced Leah, but still! It was written La-a Johnson. No joke.

I really like everyones names ... It's hard to quote everyone since I came in a little late!

Aw what a fun topic :) ... We've talked about it on and off. For girls I really like Clara, Isabella (Izzie) whch like others have said has been overused since twilight even though we wouldn't call her Bella, Paisley, Emma... FI really liked Elizabeth and Lizzie for short, but there's a girl I know that I'm too fond of and her name is Elizabeth, but he really likes Isabella/Izzie

For boys I like Parker, Aiden, Kade, Gabriel and Isaiah. FI says he really likes these ones too.

We have a long time, so who knows what we'll name our kids lol...

Random story. My mom was going to name me Kalani (prounounced Kay-Lonny) and went with Kelli. I really like my name, but now I'm starting to see that name all over the place. There have been 2 people on America's Got Talent named that. They had different spellings and I heard it somewhere else too. It's just not a common name at all.. I actually think it's cool, but I don't know if I could name any of my kids that.

OH and speaking of werid/stupid names and I think someeone mentioned knowing a Johnny Johnson or something like that well I went to school with a Johnny John Johns... not kidding. It took forever for people to convince me that was actually his name. There was another girl who had a really f-d up name and she had it changed. I know I definitely would have. I don't even want to post it ...

Thanks! My husband is Filipino so I'm really excited to see what she's going to look like. :) Pregnancy is going well so far. I'm at 22 weeks and I've only gained about 12lbs- which is right on track so hopefully I'll continue to stay "on track" and not be one of those women who gain 50+ lbs. We'll see though. :/ I just hate having that "fat" or "out of shape" feeling. That's probably the hardest for me. Once I reach 28 weeks I get to get on a reduced work hour schedule- which means I can only work 8 hr days. Wahoo! :)

I've already registered for a half-marathon during the first weekend in May, so that will be my motivation to really get back in shape after I deliver in Jan. I've ran 2 full marathons in the past couple years, but I won't have the time to devote to the training for another full since my husband will be depoloyed.

I really like Ryan- but that's his brother's name. And he's really really weird. So even if I beat the "no repeats" rule, my poor son will grow up wondering why we named him after his weird uncle Ryan. LOL Riley reminds me too much of a girl name. I don't mind Rowan or even Reid or Reese. But again with my husband being Filipino, he doesn't want a name that sounds too "white." (Is that bad?) Filipino names are traditionally hispanic, but I'm not naming my son "Reynaldo." :/

His mom keeps hounding us to name our baby after an angel. :/ I want to tell her she's lucky she's getting me to follow the damn rules without complaining.

Ha! Well at least you're having a girl this time so you don't have to worry about it.

Roland? Raffael? Neither of those are super "white". Roderick? Okay, R is a super hard letter. I like M a lot better. And I can't use M because I don't like the double initial thing and my FI's (and my future) last initial is an M.

I think if you're following your H's family's stupid rule, you get to pick the name as long as it follows their dumb rule. He doesn't get to be picky AND lock you into one letter. Nope, not fair.

I despise first names that start with M. Mine does, and it makes it hard to introduce myself. When I try to say "I'm (first name)", the two back-to-back "m" sounds blend together and I always end up having to repeat myself. Add to the mix that my name is relatively uncommon, but it doesn't rhyme with several more common names, and it's pretty impossible for people to get my name right without several repitions. It's not something you would ever think about if you didn't have an M-name, and it's small in the grand scheme of things, but it's still a daily frustration.

I always end up just saying "My name is (firstname)" instead.

I'm rather surprised you don't want to name your kids Hermoine, Ron, Ginny, etc. Or did your FI just nix that idea?
Elle - that's interesting, I never thought of it like that! Now that you mention it, I do think I saw you post that before. I guess it just didn't stick. Oh well, won't name my kids an "M" name anyway! I do love the name Marlaina, though! I'm rather surprised you don't want to name your kids Hermoine, Ron, Ginny, etc. Or did your FI just nix that idea?

Yeah, I mentioned it in a thread on NEY once. It obviously really bugs me. Haha.

And the whole HP name thing has been discussed... a few times. I wouldn't want to give my hypothetical children first names that were obviously Potter-related, but I do love the name James even out of the realm of the books. I also pitched the idea of giving a son the middle name "Potter". It's cute, right? And it's a middle name, so the kid could keep it secret if it embarassed him.

I am glad I am not the only that has really thought this through. I even said to the H that the initials must look good together when monogramming. HAA yeah I plan on putting a little girl in monogramming stuff...well a little boy for that matter as long as I can. Wow could someone please stop me!!! HAAA
In Response to Re: S/O Baby Names : Thanks! Wahoo! :) I've already registered for a half-marathon during the first weekend in May, so that will be my motivation to really get back in shape after I deliver in Jan. I've ran 2 full marathons in the past couple years, but I won't have the time to devote to the training for another full since my husband will be depoloyed.

Can I join you on the feeling like a fatty club? People tell me "oh you don't even look pregnant!" which to me, equals "you just look fatter." Because, let's face it, I don't fit into my regular clothes anymore :)

Ahh!!! I joke that I only married H so that my initials wouldn't change and I could keep all my monogramed things the same!!! Plus, my dad and I have the same initials!
