Just give it consideration, look around, write out a pro's and con's. Then you have reason for going in a different direction instead of having to say "I don't want to."
If you have at least give it consideration for their sake, then I don't think they would be too upset with you wanting to look elsewhere... Besides, it's not for your mom's wedding, it's yours/FIs so ultimately, you two should be the two making that decision.

    yeah.. MAYBE.. idk. about that.
I don't think it would be easier on everything.. Personally I think it would cause more stress by having other people take on tasks that no one would have to worry about, if you were to go with a caterer.
My FI liked lots of ideas for all different aspects. He may like the idea of it, but that doesn't mean it's a done deal. He will like others, too. :) I would say it can't hurt to keep browsing. You will be surprised at how cheap you can find places like public parks, caterers, etc.
And who knows.. after searching for other things, you may end up falling in love with the BBQ idea as well. works both ways :P For example I HATED the idea of a DJ, FI loved the idea.. we browsed, considered.. wrote out pro/con .. and we ended up going with a DJ.. I'm soooo thankful for that now and THRILLED to end up choosing a dj, even though we looked at multiple, and considered the option of just doing the ipod route.

I don't k ow if it would save you money and be easier. Our friend just had a backyard wedding and although it was beautiful, it cost them a ton of money. They had to rent Everything: tent, chairs, linens, china, glassware, bartenders, chairs for the ceremony, tables, etc. It added up to be way more than getting married in a venue. Plus they had to be in charge of everything. They had to call all the rental places, set up times, explain how they wanted everything set up, and they had people around their house for 3 days straight. Don't get me wrong, it was beautiful and one of the most unique weddings I've been too. However, it takes a lot of work and maybe even more money! Good luck :-)
