Bummed out... (Army vent..or non-army vent...)

Well, we got the news today that my FI will not be getting the 3 1/2 yr scholarship from the Army that we were looking forward to for dental school. He started this week. We were disappointed when he missed the mark for the 4 yr. scholarship, and were told that he was for sure in this October for the 3 1/2 one... but I guess they did away with it and are only offering 3 & 2 yr. We were relying on that sign on bonus, and the monthly stipend to get out of his mommas house by June next year, and obviously that's out of the question now. The word for the 3 yr. entrance should come in October, but I am so afraid that we will be disappointed again, and it will not be offered to him. He has Army connections, impeccable grades, and passed his physicals and all, so there shouldn't be any worry, but there still is. I know the military is unpredictable, I guess I expected no issues getting in. I mean, who has an issue trying to get IN to the Army?!

While the Army is usually one of the easier ones to get into, getting into the military now isn't what it used to be.  Just to be clear, I'm not trying to say it's easy to get into the Army, just saying that compared to the other branches they have less restrictions and accept more people.

That stinks about the scholarship though, hopefully he gets good news down the road.

Thanks. it's so stressful. That's exactly the reason why we were going Army in the first place, it was easier, they offered the bonus, and the scholarship was for 4 yrs. But now, I guess with everything happening in the economy, they did away with those scholarships I mentioned before.

Unfortunately our country's incredible debt is hurting everyone in random ways... And military cutbacks are part of that. :/
I'm sorry that you guys didn't get what you were hoping for, but sending positive vibes your way that he'll at least get the 3 year one.

The military will promise you "stuff" to sign you. The recruiters told my FI he would for sure be able to get into the program he wanted which included a pretty sizable bonus. Of course, they "missed something" he actually wasn't qualified and he never got the bonus.

Sometimes  with the military(and many things in life), they tell you what you want to hear...just to make you happy.

    It is frustrating at times...

Thanks FTL, we could use all the vibes we can get :) I'm trying to stay positive, but the thought has crossed my mind about not getting the bonus at all... but really I just hope he gets in so that he has some stability as a dentist when he does get out of school. Trying to be a dentist in CA is really really hard, and we really want him to specialize as an oral surgeon, something we simply cannot accomplish without him being in the Army. Besides, it's FI's dream to serve as a dentist. His father and brother did it, and he so wants to follow in their footsteps.

Boo that sucks! Getting into one of the education-reimbursed/scholarship programs have gotten MUCH harder since 2007! And FI is currently fighting to get a $5000 stipend he's gotten the last two years from the Marines. This year they are "adjusting the policy" so he has to wait while they "prepare their systems", which we all know means we'll be lucky if we ever see that money. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you guys! Pull all those strings you've got - networking is key so etimes.

Thanks Calindi, yeah his brother pulled some strings to get him at the top of the list I guess for this next round, but that doesn't mean I am not discouraged... I'm sorry about your FI's situation as well, crossing my fingers for you all as well! That's a lot of money to be holding from someone! EEK!
