Alcohol at the wedding?

We were wondering how you gals calculated how much alcohol you needed?

We're only going to offer wine (one red and one white option). We're looking at about 90 people, but probably only about 70-75% of them will drink (the rest are nondrinking family).

TIA.

Re: Alcohol at the wedding?

  • We had about 90100 people, a case of red and a case of white, and a keg of beer. It was plenty for us because we don't have a lot of heavy drinkers... Except for you know, me. Ha ha!
  • Shiiit... We calcuated people would drink around 6 drinks (some people more, some less), throughout the night....people didn't. I have so much alcohol that I need to return.  Didn't help that most of it was locked in a storage closet all night.

On the bright side I will have a lot of money I get back...

If I ever get around to returning it..

There are supposed to be 5 glasses of wine in a bottle. If someone else is pouring you'll probably get close to that. If your guests are pouring.... you probably won't.

You and your FI probably know the drinking habits of your family and friends. Maybe you estimate 3 glasses per person. And you have 90 people. That's 54 bottles of wine if everyone has 3 glasses. So you can err on the side of too much or aim for a few bottles less assuming you know some people won't have any.

Are they big drinkers? Also do they all like wine? There are people out there who don't even drink wine, do you have another option too like beer or is it all wine? We had a full open bar since everyone love to drink! I know people definitely had more than 3.... hahaha

<div>Moderate drinkers? Basically the drinkers are coworkers. They are also all the type who don't care what they're drinking if they aren't paying for it (I've been to plenty of parties and weddings for people who are associated with our group, and nobody cares if it's just wine, just beer, etc). Neither of us are beer drinkers, so we don't want to be left with beer at the end of this. All of the functions I've attended with this group, there was always leftover beer but not enough wine, so we decided to just offer wine. Not really a "normal" thing, but it seems to be the best considering the different factors we've looked at.</div>

Okay... so factor a bottle per person and get everyone a really long straw as part of their favor!

  • We went through 3 kegs and and like 60ish bottles of wine. We had 240 ppl show but only had about 75-100 by the time the dance started. Ppl Dinning and dashing! Oh H's family is non-drinkers.

I tried using an online drink calculator but our venue had a similar wedding a month prior so they let me copy their drink estimates. It was just an estimate and when we went over they gave us the bill. (we did ask for a 4th keg on reserve JIC so it was on hand, but didn't need it ).

    I want the COOOOOKIE!

Stupid mobile TK. Ninety to a hundred, not ninety thousand one hundred. Can you imagine?!
  • Generally you're supposed to calculate 1.5 drinks per person per hour. But that's probably more for beer and liquor which people typically drink faster.

  • We invited 286 people.
I bought 8 -1.75L of Captain Morgan and Absolut Vodka (16 bottles total), 6- 1.75L of Jim Beam Whiskey. 3 bottles of Peach Schnapps.  2 Kegs and 10 bottles of wine.

I know we'll have a ton left over, but I'd rather have more than I need and return it, than not enough.

And I would be sad if there was no beer, only wine.

Ditto this.  But I'm typically bummed if there's only Bud & Bud Light or similar pond water.  But to each their own - there's no need to offer any alcohol, so anything is fine, as long as there's soft drinks and juices readily available for everyone.

We're doing wine & beer & specialty drink (sangria)... our venue does not allow kegs, so it's all bottles and cans.  We estimated 6 drinks per person (some are light drinkers, and some are heavy, so we leaned towards heavy as we can return unopened containers - check with your liquor store to see if that's possible).  We divided that up into 3's, so 2 drinks per person of wine, beer, and sangria.  With 150 approximate people, that's 300 beers, 300 / 5 bottles of wine = 60, and 300 glass of sangria (divided by the recipe to figure out ingredients needed).  We rounded up on all of those in case we find we have a crowd that tends towards one beverage, so 400 beers, 80 bottles of wine, and 400 glasses of sangria.

Nice Stan!  We're doing all craft, since we're bringing in our own booze we can have as many varieties as we want, so we're going to do a bit of a beer tasting station sort of thing - 8-9 different kinds of beer, our favorites of different styles (IPA, brown ale, stout, porter, lager, pilsner, and a few others).  We'll have Labatt's as our cheap beer - FI's family is from upstate NY and they all drink that, so they'll love it.  And FI's Dad and his buddies are the ones who will drink a lot of cheap beer, so might as well give them what they like!

For wines, we're similarly offering a variety.  Malbec and Cabernet Savignon and Merlot, and Chardonnay, Savignon Blanc, and Pinot Grigio, as well as a Moscato and a White Zinfandel.

I'm most excited about the sangria, but I can't drink any!  Me in a white dress with a red drink would be a disaster.  So beer it is - which is just fine by me!
