QOTD 8.28.11

What are you (or did you) study in college and why? Is FI/DH going to school along with the military?

I'm studying advertising. I was a double major in graphic design and advertising but I ended up not liking the graphic design classes. I also have to have a DAC (designated area of concentration)for my advertising major. It's 21 credits so I'm just going to add event management as my second major.

FI is studying kinesiology and wants to go to PT school through the Army.

I majored in Spanish with a business minor. I still don't know what I want to do with my life and i've been out of school since May 2010. i'm thinking of going back to school for something in the medical field but we'll see. FI majored in Mass Communication and did ROTC. He graduated in 2009 and is Medical Service in the Army.

I changed my major 5 times (secondary ed, chemistry, writing, nutrition) before I finished my AS in respiratory care and my BS in healthcare. When I do eventually get into the Army I plan on taking masters courses either to further my healthcare admin degree or to become a PA. DH went to a semester of college to be a Nurse through an Army program before he decided to go from green to blue (Army to Navy). He got a majority of his college credits in corps school but he's taking classes online in healthcare admin. He doesn't everwant to be an officer but having a BS will look good on a Chief's package some day.

Kendall, when you go back to school make sure you're doing the right things for your officer's package then to show you're a team player and a leader. Join a few clubs or an intramural sport. Try to be an officer in one of those clubs. A lot of colleges have freshmen mentor programs so see if you can do that. That's the stuff they're telling me to have on my app. I'm sure they'll tell you all that but it's some helpful wisdom from someone already working on an app.

I got my undergrad in Elementary Ed/special ed with a concentration in English. I decided then I didn't want to teach and went and got my masters in School Counseling/Mental health counseling. I worked for 3 years as an addictions therapist and now I work as a Child and Adolescent Family Therapist.  I really want to go back and get my Ph.d, however the closest school that offers Ph.d. in counselor education is in Columbia, which is 2 1/2-3 hrs away from me so I have to figure out a new plan. There is only online school that is certified that offers it, the rest aren't certified by any national board so I won't apply there.

H is planning to go to school while in Marines, but probably just liberal arts since when he wants to get out he either wants to work for Boeing and Gulf Stream. He will have the qualifications since he is an airframe mechanic. He will need to get other certifications as well, but if he gets hired by either of those companies, they will help him get them. They like hiring Marines from his MOS because of the training they get while in service.

Um, mostly DNA identification stuff. When you hear on tv that someone was convicted or exonerated of a crime because of DNA evidence, that means someone compared the suspect's DNA to unknown DNA found at a crime scene and either it matched or it didn't match. I'm not in that field anymore though, but it's still really interesting to me.

I was/am lucky and knew right away what I wanted to do. I double majored getting 2 BA's one in Criminal Justice and another in Sociology. While I was in the program it was super easy to double major, I literally only had to take a couple extra courses. 2 of which I took while abroad in Ireland. WOO WOO. haha

In Minnesota the police academy is part of the educational system so once I finished my bachelors I received a Certifcate in Law Enforcement.

I was accepted into a Graduate Program at our current station, which I will start next year. It is Criminal Justice but theory and research based, which I LOVE.
My goal is to work in Law Enforcement while I get my masters, then perhaps my PhD so I can teach Criminology at the Collegiate level.

    Okay now for H
H went to the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO. Although he knew he wanted to fly, everyone still gets a degree. He picked Computer Systems Engineering although he admits now he wished he stuck with Civil Engineering.

I got my BS in Exercise Science with a concentration in Allied Health and a minor in Spanish..now I'm in grad school and will have my DPT (Doctor of Physical Therapy) degree in just over a year.  I am soooo ready to be out of school!

FI did ROTC, so he got his BS in Economics, and will possibly want to get his Master's eventually...he's not sure yet. He just got out of school though, so he's happy just focusing on the Army right now :)

Right now, I'm majoring in Information Technology with a concentration in Networking and Database. I'm also working on a degree through UMUC in Computer Science and I have an Associates in Information Management.

FI is majoring in Criminal Justice and is about to start his Graduate degree in the same field focusing on Anti-Terrorism.

Since we're both military already, for me the computer degrees go with my current career field and hopefully future career field when I get commissioned. FI has the same associates as I do because we were in the same field when enlisted, but he's now doing ROTC and will join the Intlligence field.

When I was in school, I majored in nursing but stopped doing that for the time being. I guess it sort of took a toll on me, having a patient die right before my eyes really got to me. Now I am unsure whether to pursue that further or go back for another degree, which will most likely either be Respiratory Tech or something about entrepreneurship(H and I have been thinking about maybe opening up our business, like a store). I'm waiting to move to see what my options are when we get to VA.

H has no degree but he does have a lot of college credits from all the nuclear engineering classes he had to take while in A and Power school. I have been trying to convince him to pursue it further to get the degree because he really only needs general ed mostly, but he says he's too old to go back to school, but he will  give it a thought. Maybe when we get to shore duty is when he'll have the chance to actually do it.

I lurk here quite a bit but figured I would chime in :) I have an AS in radiologic sciences and am currently working on a BS (also in radiologic sciences). I'll graduate in December. FI might transfer his GI bill to me after we are married to go to PA school. FI left active duty army and started working on a degree in criminal justice but didn't finish due to being offered a full time position with the National Guard.

FI takes classes when he can, but as a flyer, it's difficult for him to take B&M classes, and he greatly prefers them to Embry Riddle.

GG-Almost all of FI's family works for GS. FI was planning on it, has his A&P license, etc. but they put a hiring freeze and he reenlisted.

FI is interested in going back to school when he gets out of AD Marines, he wants to do something aviation related, and he loves his job as an airframes mechanic.
