What to wear?

Hi everyone!

This weekend Fi and I have been invited to "mandatory fun" which is what he calls any social event he's expected to attend for Army things. He was a bit vague on the details, but aparrently someone important is retiring and there will be a party at Fi's commander's house. And, for once, I'm actually in the area, so I'll be going along too!

It's my first one of these casual type gatherings, so I'm a bit stuck on what to wear. The party, according to Fi, is beach themed, which to him means we should just go in shorts and t-shirts. I'm worried if I did that I'd be absurdly underdressed. But I rarely dress up, and I'd feel silly if I wore a nice sundress and sandals while everyone else was in shorts and t-shirts! Any advice?

(PS I always like to overthink these things! It's much more entertaining than working)

Edit: I'm an idiot and didn't read your post correctly.

I would probably wear a summer dress and if no one else wasn't, I wouldn't worry about it. Summer dresses are relaxed enough that they fit in with other people in dresses but don't look stupid when everyone else is wearing shorts.

I went to a Hail and Farewell with FI and he told me it was casual. To play it safe I wore white capri (slacks not jeans) and a dressier sleeveless shirt. There were a lot of ladies in jeans and cute shirts (not tshirts) and the guys wore khaki shorts or jeans and a dress shirt. I think a sundress would be fine though because they are still casual enough but you'll look really nice :)

I would do a sundress or jeans and a nice shirt.

I second the sundress. I think it's the perfect go to outfit, not to mention you won't get super hot in it!

Thanks everyone! I'm fashion impaired enough that I tend to mentally classify clothes in two catagories: fancy and not-fancy. So I have trouble remembering that a cotton dress is not the same leve of fancy as, say, a ballgown!
