Packing Tips?

I know a lot of you ladies have lots of moving experience... I've moved quite a bit, but this is my first time moving 2 people (and a dog) and not just myself.  And it's been 3 years now, so my moving skills are a bit rusty.

Any suggestions for organizing a move?  Any tips on packing?

Throw it all in a box and call it good.

Just Kidding. We went through a lot of moves as kids, and make sure and label the boxes, it sounds like a no-brainer but It would help the unpacking process a lot easier. And make sure and mark boxes for each room.  The really anal person in me says make an excel file of what is in each box so you will know where your favorite X is when you are unpacking... I didnt do that for my move across town last year, and I still an unorganized mess.

    Also, throw away a LOTTTTT...

  • Throw out everything! Ha. No really just keep organized if possible, label everything. But really go through stuff to see if you need it anymore.

  • I pack one room at a time so I don't get overwhelmed and then mark the hell out of the boxes so I know what is in them.

  • For Clothes, I make several piles. I fill one bag for Plato's Closet or similar store that buys used clothing. I fill another bag for the Airmen's Attic on base (you may pick GoodWill or similar place). Then what's left I pack for the move. I ususally pack my clothing in my extra luggage for the move. I hate the smell my clothes get when they are in boxes. BTW everytime I've bought wardorabe boxes they have broken during the move. I didn't even pack a lot of clothes in them. I wont use them again.

For Decor, I keep a lot but some times things are super awkward to pack or I no longer like it, I try to sell it or donate.

For anything Fragile if you think it's okay wrap it again lol. I thought I did a good job but there was a lot that the movers re-wraped and re packed for me. Even then I had 1 ceramic piece break. Always fill the empty with balls of newspaper.

Keep the smaller boxes heavy. Don't make the bigger boxes heavy-- they may fit more but they are impossible to carry when they are heavy.

I sort our boxes by room but some people sort by category (ie frames, decor etc). Since you dunno where you will be moving that may be a route to take.

    I want the COOOOOKIE!

I'm probably moving this summer and was thinking of using the apprach Amanda suggested:  labeling boxes with the room and a number.  Then make an excel sheet with what is in each numbered box.  Or something like that.

H and I moved most of our stuff into our apartment before the wedding.  He was bringing stuff from his apartment two hours away and his parent's house, and I was bringing stuff from my dorm and my parent's house.  We literally just set stuff down wherever and it was a mess to come back to after the honeymoon!  Plus we had to add our wedding gifts to the mix.  Horrible.  So the lesson is...be organized!

ETA:  Why do I have a gold badge?!
  • It looks like they gave everyone a gold bage.

It's like we are all special snowflakes.

on packing- I numbered boxes and I wrote on them exactly what was in each one. I also threw out and gave away A LOT of stuff.
