ring bearer to hold ACTUAL rings?

Our ring bearer will be 8 years old and brother to our flower girl - age 6.  Do people usually give their RB the actual rings??  How does it normally work with them walking down the aisle... then what?  Does the kid hand the pillow to the best man or officiant?

If fake rings are used - where have people bought fake toy rings?

Re: ring bearer to hold ACTUAL rings?

  • Usually, in weddings that I play, the best man and/or MOH hold the real rings.  The RB is only there for the cute factor.  You can buy fake rings at any craft type store (Michael's, Hobby Lobby).

In DD's wedding last summer, the BM held both rings and handed them to the minister at the right time during the ceremony.  I personally wouldn't be comfortable giving a little kid something as important as the real rings.

Regarding giving the RB the real rings: NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DH and I actually almost had a fight about this (Our RB was his nephew, who was 8 at the time of the wedding). He kept insisting that giving him fake rings would "cheapen the experience". I wound up finally asking DH if he remembered whether or not he had the real rings when he was a RB at age 10 ... and for the life of him, he could only remember "being bored" and "his feet hurting" from standing during the ceremony.

Anyway, I wound up "winning" the ring dispute (The Best Man had the rings), and I'm so glad I did. During the ceremony, the GMs and RB entered, then we seated the moms. Right before the first BM walked, our RB screams at the top of his lungs "I HAVE TO PEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!" and bolted. We waited for him to come back from the bathroom before we continued. When we got back from our HM, we had a voicemail from our venue saying they found our RB pillow on the men's room floor. Apparently, when he went to the bathroom, he took the pillow with him and left it there (The really weird part, when we picked it up, the fake rings were gone ... and they were tied on pretty good).

We got our fake rings at Michaels. It was like $2.00 for a bag of like 250 fake rings.  You can always use the extras to decorate the favors or programs or something.

  • No, the ring bearer gets fake dime store rings.  The best man usually has the real rings.

  • Our BM and MOH held our rings. I wouldn't give them to a little kid.

You can buy ring pillows with fake rings already attached or you can get cheap rings at any costume jewelry store like Clairs. Or you dno't even have to have fake rings at all. The ring bearer can just carry the pillow, no one is going to be looking to make sure there are rings on there.
  • claires has cute fake rings too

  • Our ring bearers are 8 and 10, and I'm letting them carry the rings, then hand them to the MOH and best man.  It all depends on yoru RB, how much do you trust him?  It's your call, you know him.
  • Granted my son was 2 at the time (closing on three) but he was ring bearer for his cousin's wedding.

Before he walked out, the conversation went as follows.
Me: "Those aren't the....real...rings, are they?"
Bridesmaid: "I'm tying them on tight."

    I was thinking....okkkk.

And then what happens after he walks down the aisle of an outdoor ceremony?  Neither ring was there.  The guests were combing the grass for them.

my two RB will be 4 and 3. they will be carrying each ring in a drawstring satchel.. but i dont want them to come out before me.. i love my boys and i want them to be up there with us... so when the preacher asks who has the rings or whatev.. luke and ki will each walk up and give the rings to me and FI. they are a big part of my life and to have them come up there with me would only warm my heart even more! oh and they will be in like the 2 or 3rd pew or something.. so they wont have to walk as far!

oh by the way.. when i say my boys.. i mean nephews!! lol luke and malachi are my nephews!!
  • Thanks for the info.

I haven't met our RB yet but he's 8 and not a baby!   I'm considering giving him the real rings.  I'll run it by his mother to check the maturity but I think we'll have someone tie the rings on the pillow right before the walk down the aisle... then have him hand them to the officiant or BM & MOH when he gets to the front.

I'm going to get some fake ones, just incase.
  • My RB will be my children, and we are marrying on the beach. They will walk down with fake rings!
  • Fake rings, but don't tell the kid that.  FBIL was RB for his aunt's wedding years ago, and he threw a fit when he realized his "job" was pointless.
