Waxing (TMI?)

So I'm hoping this doesn't make anyone uncomfortable, but I'm guessing it won't since we talk about BC at least once a week :)

Does anyone have any advice/horror stories/recommendations regarding bikini/brazilian waxes? I'm thinking about maybe scheduling one and I'm pretty much a huge scardy cat.

Thank you for bringing this up! I've never waxed. I have this thing: http://www.amazon.com/Schick-Quattro-Trimstyle-Bikini-Trimmer/dp/B001TH8Q72

Honestly it doesn't work ALL that great always. But, I think mine is just old. I've had it for over a year now. It kind of stops working and I have to bang it on the counter to make it go again. But when it does work, it works wonderfully. I just take off the trimmer cover so it gives me a really close shave. It honeslty looks like it's been shaved, except without the red bumps. I really want to wax, but I'm too scared of the pain. So, this works well in its place.

I have that thing too! For some reason, the trimmer part never worked well for me. I kept it for the razor part, though :P

I wax. Brazilian. It is scary the first time you go. And honestly, if it's been a while I still have to hype myself up. I'm not gonna lie, it's not a walk in the park. But I love my lady (why this helps, I have no idea). And the two major reasons I continue to go is 1) BF loves it. No big deal if I don't have time to do it, or I go a bit long between appointments, but it's a small thing that makes him giddy, so why not. And 2) after you start waxing, if you pick up shaving again, then go back to waxing it HURTS LIKE MOTHERF*CKER! More so than going long between sessions. I don't know why. It sounds very urban legend-y, and something waxers just tell their clients to keep them coming back, but I tested it and for me it's true.

Everyone's pain level is different, so mine might be low, but I find it (the pain/discomfort) manageable if I go on a semi-regular basis. Maybe take an advil or 2 before the session.

Bikini waxes are NBD. Seriously. The skin in those areas that they wax for bathing suits and skimpy underthings is not as sensitive as when they take it all off.

And horror stories, well...If you ask them not to they won't, and some places don't, but the majority of places I've heard of or experienced (as well as friends) also wax the bum area (yes, backsides, A*ses, whatever). The first time can be somewhat traumatizing. Especially if you don't know it's coming. It's pretty standard with a brazilin, though. I'm not sure if they do it automatically with a bikini wax. But be ready when they ask you to turn over. You know where it's going.

Good luck! If it makes you feel better I have never heard anyone yell out in my place, so you know, there's thatWink

I've had a bikini wax a few dozen of times. Recently I've gone to the same lady, (I'm actually considering booking an appt before my next beach trip-wootwoot). Anyways--she has suggested I go for the Brazilian and I've thought "Uhh why would she volunteer for that??" but maybe cause it costs more? I dunno. I can't spend too much time thinking about it, weirds me out.

Anywho that's at the Red Door Spa near me. Which is wicked comfy, sitting in the waiting room makes me feel like money.

Sorta Horror Story- I used to go to this place near my Old Navy, back in the day it was a decent place-hair salon-spa type place. But the LAST time I went there I booked an appt before visiting it again (it had been a few years...) and when I went in there was like no one there but a guy and a lady. The hair salon section was all dark and empty and the shelves were bare. And it was clear they were going out of business. I was super paranoid it was gonna be the guy that invited me to the cozy warm room with the hot wax dish... But luckily the lady did. And I dunno it just seemed real quiet and ghetto. Never again. When taking off your pants I feel it is important to feel super-DUPER comfortable, and I did not feel it there. I waddled away thinking I had gone through with the appt out of pity. Never again.

I've had bikini waxes, full brazilians and betweenie bikinis (more than a bikini wax but not a full brazilian). As others have said, brazillians do involve removal of ALL the hair down there, but most will leave the back side alone if you ask.

If you're worried about pain I would totally recommend finding a place that uses hard wax instead of soft wax. I had my first hard wax bikini wax this summer after not going for waxing for a few months and it hardly hurt at all!

Definitely agree with the hard wax being better!  And in the interest of full disclosure, I do a couple tequila shots before hand.  To each his own... : )

I think I'm gonna go to the salon tomorrow and beg them to see if they can get me in this week. I'd rather go in personally in case they have any numbing creams or something.

My prediction: They'll be able to get me in right away and I'll have no time to mentally prepare myself. That might be best. That's what happened when I got my nose pierced :P

The salon I go to has a pretty good FAQ section on Brazilians, especially about what to do or not to do before and after.
http://beautyandbodylounge.com/ (Go to Services and click on Waxing and the FAQ link is on the left-hand side.)

I don't use the cream that they recommend, but I do take a couple Advil or Tylenol an hour or so before my appointment. I would definitely make sure that whomever you go to is an esthetician. The first person I ever went to wasn't and it was a miserable experience.

I would get horrible razor burn when I would shave.  After waxing, I will never go back to shaving. Good luck!

I've heard that you shouldn't drink coffee before hand because it makes it hurt more. Not sure if this is a fact but better safe than sorry I guess.

I go every month for a brazilian so I'm pretty used to it now but the first time is definitely the worst.  I agree with PP to take Advil (I used to take 3 about an hour before my appt) & to exfoliate.  I go to 'European Wax Center' which is a chain & they're actually really fantastic IMO.  There should definitely be one in your area.  They use these little pellets of wax that they melt, there are no strips at all, just the wax, & it's designed to ONLY stick to the hair, not the skin.  The one by me is super clean & they don't double dip at all.  Hope this helps!!

PS I don't have any horror stories personally but my aunt went somewhere in NYC & the girl doing her wax asked if she wanted a landing strip, my aunt had no idea what she was talking about & so the girl actually lifted up her skirt, pulled down her underwear, & showed her.  Needless to say my aunt was mortified & never went back again.  She heard later that the girl was fired.

I can handle pain.  What I'm not all about is being in the nudie around someone I've known for five minutes.  But that's just me.

This. Which is why I think the tequila shots would work better for me than the Tylenol.

I have never had a bikini or Brazilian, but after reading this I kinda want to. It sounds so much easier. And shaving sucks the big one, IMO.
