Not Engaged Yet

Computer Fixed, Finally Back and Curious About Rings

I've been gone for almost a month due to computer problems and I refuse to go to TK at my job, but I am back now.

Been doing great. BF is doing great too. Last week he said he was screwed when time to propose comes because he only likes white gold rings. I told him that I would like just about anything that symbolizes love. What about you, what rings would you rather get?

Although we had discussions about rings, we're still not ready to get married. Don't get me wrong, I want to get engaged, but I just feel that this is not time to get married.

Perhaps he thinks she likes something else.  Perhaps he is of the opinion that rings are supposed to be something else.  Some people have strong opinions on this topic.

That is entirely true - I just wanted to know in her particular case why him only liking white gold makes him screwed.

I don't think you should be worrying about rings and engagements until you are ready to be married, JMO.

There is nothing wrong with white gold for me. As I said, just anything would do. I just asked about rings out of curiosity Smile

I still don't get why he's "screwed" for the proposal because he only likes white gold.

    I also agree with Heart.

I just thought about it because he brought up the rings to our conversation. We haven't set up a timeframe yet.

Maybe he thinks white gold is more expensive? It isn't.  Mzm, why is he screwed? <div>
</div><div>I'll bite on the original question -- I used to think I only liked white gold or platinum, but if I had a more rustic setting I'd be happy to have yellow or rose gold. By rustic I mean like this </div>
    <a href="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/images/store/2/14/5242b3e3-9241-4535-ae92-ceff9a9d964b.large.jpg" title="Click to view a larger photo" onclick="return gSiteLife.LoadForumPage('ForumImage', 'plckPhotoId', '5242b3e3-9241-4535-ae92-ceff9a9d964b', 'plckRedirectUrl', gSiteLife.EscapeValue(window.location.href));" class="PhotoLink"> <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/images/store/2/14/5242b3e3-9241-4535-ae92-ceff9a9d964b.medium.jpg" alt="" /></a>
<div>versus something like this, which I think looks better in a white metal:</div>
    <a href="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/images/store/14/11/5e99340b-c2bc-404c-bb1b-24fa1ada2220.large.jpg" title="Click to view a larger photo" onclick="return gSiteLife.LoadForumPage('ForumImage', 'plckPhotoId', '5e99340b-c2bc-404c-bb1b-24fa1ada2220', 'plckRedirectUrl', gSiteLife.EscapeValue(window.location.href));" class="PhotoLink"> <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/images/store/14/11/5e99340b-c2bc-404c-bb1b-24fa1ada2220.medium.jpg" alt="" /></a>
    <div>
</div><div>Of course, neither of these is something I'd choose for myself, but I'm just giving examples of my opinion on metals and settings. Yeah.</div><div>

If things were perfect in the financial aspect, I'd be all for it. Right now I can't afford to pay housing for the two of us (my BF cannot afford to move out of his parents' house). He had a job before in which he could live on his own, but after being laid off he had to move back with his parents and get a job that doesn't pay much.
If he proposed now, I'd say yes, but would want to wait until our financial situation is better, which I think it would take about a year or more (when we both save up enough to move in together). As I said, I do wanna get married, but realistically its not time for that.

cschiano, these rings are very pretty and I'd be very happy he gave either of these to me or just about any other. Actually I like the second one better Smile

I would personally rather have white gold because the other kind of jewelry I wear is white gold or silver.  But I would still be thrilled even if my BF got me a gold ring.  He knows I like white gold though so I doubt that would happen.

I like gold, but my ring is white gold.  I love it just the way it is because it was from FI.

Just like with wedding dresses, to find one you like you'll need to go into the store and try them on.  When I did I realized that there were some that I just didn't like on my finger, but looked pretty on the website.

Also, you mentioned financial stress. You should check out the magazines outside of the major jewelers.  Lots of times they'll have magazines outside of stores with all of the ones on sale. Also, since it's christmas time, lots of them have special deals. Somethin to look into.
When you love someone, you can tell. When you're in love with someone, everyone else can tell.

I think I've decided that I would prefer yellow gold and I like the classic look of a solitaire but with a little bit of detail on the band. Also, I think we've decided that we are going to go with an Asha ring. BF could afford more but I don't like the idea of wearing something super expensive everyday. So the rings we've looked at range between $500 - $800 (which is still a lot in mind!).

I would totally be happy with a plastic ring out of a cracker jack box but that would probably turn my finger green if I wore something like that every day lol

FI and I had looked for a little while before he purchased my ring.  I prefer white gold or platinum to yellow gold, but I think any metal really can be beautiful.  (I think Hetshup has rose gold bands and they're stunning!)

One thing that was tough for me was cut and what settings I liked.  I tried on every cut of diamond imaginable and only liked the way cushion cut diamonds looked on my hands.  Also, for the band, I didn't want a plain band, but I didn't want one with enormous diamonds all the way around because I thought it looked a bit "much".  So, we ended up getting a cushion cut diamond and a setting that has smaller channel set diamonds.

It really is a very personal decision and honestly, prior to trying rings on, I had no idea I'd be so picky...seeing things on your fingers makes a huge difference.

I prefer white gold or palladium (which is a bit more durable than platnium).

I love the look of yellow gold. I think it contrasts most stones beautifully.
    I'm not good at feelings.
