Never-Heard-Of-It Movies

I'm back to being unemployed and a lot of my time is spent watching movies. If it's one thing I love other than music, it is movies. But I'm running out of movies. So, please share with me a movie that you really love - any genre but horror, please - but no one else you know has heard of it. Maybe it was an indie film that was only shown in select theaters, or a foreign film that was never released in the U.S., or maybe you caught it on HBO at 4AM because there was nothing else on and you ended up loving it - you know, something like that.

For example, I love this film called "The Door in the Floor", staring Jeff Bridges, Kim Basinger and Elle Fanning (baby sister of Dakota). It's about an 18 year old boy who signs on to be a writer's assistant for a summer. The writer and his wife lost their teenage sons in an accident years ago, and tried to save their marriage by having another child, but it's not working, and at the film's beginning, they are separated. The boy ends up carrying on an affair with the writer's wife. It's loosely based on the novel A Widow For One Year by John Irving. It's a very heavy drama, and I saw it for a media criticism class in college. I loved it so much I bought the DVD. But no one else I know has heard of it!

So gimme some flicks!

    Mini's First Time.

Idk if it is your type of movie, but it is really sick and twisted. This girl and her step father plan to kill her mother. It isn't scary, just twisted... but I like it.

Well, don't know if this is your style, but I love one called "Good Bye, Lenin!" about the Berlin wall (stay with me).....

...It's a comedy, yet sad - This guy's mom is sick and very fragile mentally, so he decides to do "fake TV broadcasts" for her saying that the Berlin wall is NOT coming down...I can't really explain it but it's weirdly funny/sad/touching.

I LOVE not-as-well-known movies/documentaries, but I am strangely having a mental block...I usually go on to Netflix, HBO, or Showtime and watch obscure things from their movies section.

I just watched a few on HBO which all happened to be set in Africa, but I can't remember the titles of the movies.  One is about a girl who wants to join the African ballet, and then there were some documentaries which were quite sad.

I love John Cleese and there is a movie he did about lemurs (a documentary tho, not a satirical movie).

HBO just had a series on Alzheimer's that I think was done very well (documentaries though).  Another one called "Panic" about ppl with panic attacks.

I know those are random, let me think about this more and get back to you...

ZOMG! I totally saw Goodbye, Lenin in my German Culture class. I liked it a lot. It's very funny just because the circumstances are so outlandish.

One movie that I liked was called Gia. I think it was an HBO original movie. It has Angelina Jolie before she became a huge star, and it's based on the life of the first supermodel Gia Carangi. She became famous really fast and it caused her to turn to drugs. It's a pretty dark movie to say the least.

whereyat, I LOVE documentaries so much I took a class on them! We watched documentaries every week and then discussed them. It was my favorite class. Check out "Capturing the Friedmans" - it's about an upper-middle class family on Long Island that is rocked by an accusation of pedophilia in the mid 1980's. The documentarian, Andrew Jarecki, set out at first make a film about the lives and careers of clowns in the NYC area. Strangely enough, when he went to interview a professional clown named David Friedman, this story unfolded.

Oh, while we're on the topic of documentaries, I saw one recently called The Wild and Wonderful Whites of Boon County. It follows the lives of a family named the Whites in West Virginia. They're kind of the stereotypical white trash family that everyone pictures, especially considering some of the antics they get into. I think I found it easy to relate to because I lived in a small town for a while, and some people in that town were very similar to the Whites.

There is a very interesting movie that I really like called "Pumpkin." It stars Christina Ricci. It's about her falling in love with a handicapped boy. Kinda heartwarming, kinda sad, but I like it.

Ooh, I will check that one out!!  Thx for the recommendation!

    <u>Warning: LONG:</u>
Ok, so I went to the HBO Documentaries site: <a href="http://www.hbo.com/documentaries/catalog/index.html" rel="nofollow">http://www.hbo.com/documentaries/catalog/index.html</a> , to jog my memory.  I was having a hard time remembering the actual titles......so here are the ones from there I have seen *and* would recommend (again, long):

-Hear and Now (OMG so sweet/sad, the grandparents who are deaf both get cochlear implants for the first time....)
-The Alzheimer's Project (I mentioned before)
-Every F--ing Day of My Life (Very, very, sad, that's all I'll say about it <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-cry.gif" border="0" alt="Cry" title="Cry" />, it still kind of haunts me)
-Homeless: The Motel Kids of Orange County (also sad, geez I watch a lot of depressing stuff...)
-A Family Is A Family (though it turns out this was a kids' film I still watched it, it's cute)
    -Autism: The Musical (so sweet)
    -China's Stolen Children. (SAD <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-cry.gif" border="0" alt="Cry" title="Cry" />).
-Coma. HIGHLY recommended.  One of the lines from there has become sort of a motto for me but I dunno if I want to give it away if you're gonna watch it...
    -Diagnosis Bipolar
-Making the Crooked Straight - about an expat in Africa, more uplifting than sad
-Monica and David - follows a couple with Down Syndrome thru the first year of their marriage, this kind of restored my faith in humanity
-Music by Prudence - about a girl in Africa, and her buddies, with physical disabilities who sing in a band, very sweet
-No One Dies in Lily Dale - a movie about spiritual mediums and the readings they do - I bawled my eyes out...
-Resolved - about a student debate team, both uplifting and frustrating
-Rough Aunties - a group of women who help abused children in Africa, your heart just goes out to them, it's a little tough to watch
-Saving the Witch Children --also in Africa, this group saves children who are wrongly thought to be possessed by demons
-Smile Pinki - helping children with cleft palates, awww it's such a sweet story
-Teenage Papparazzo - with "Vince" from Entourage
--We Are Together: about a choir in Africa, SO SWEET.

Ones that I have seen from there, that I found to be kind of so-so:
-Thank You Mr. President - about Helen Thomas, whom I love, but the movie just "dragged" a lot it seems
-Wide Awake - about insomnia but was just "ehh" for me
-Cat Dancers.  It's SUPER-WEIRD, I felt a little icky after watching it, I dunno.
-The Conscience of Nhem En - I dunno, good idea for a film, but the whole thing was just like "yeah it was really sad back then."
-Google Baby - About (mostly) international surrogates, I didn't finish it, it just kind of dragged
-Kevorkian - Kind of not interesting to me, might have been more pertinent a few yrs ago
-A Small Act - Didn't finish it....an African man wants to repay a Swedish woman for her kindness, it's nice, but I dunno something has to "happen" in a documentary, for me to be interested
-Smash His Camera - About the papparazzi, another one that just dragged for me, didn't finish it
-Three Sisters: One has Lou Gehrig's disease - it's quite sad.

Ones that *I* liked, but YMMV:
    -The UCLA Dynasty
-Friends of God: A Road Trip
    -By The People
    -The Trials of Ted Haggard
    -The Yes Men

So hmm, just reading over my list, I guess I think HBO does a little bit better with... "people's lives today" stories, rather than trying to do historical documentaries.

**One last recommendation: <strong>The Business of Being Born.</strong>

I LOOOVE The Door in the Floor.

    Some of my favorites include:

Me and You and Everyone We Know, a really sweet and thought-provoking story about a performance artist and a disconnected shoe salesman. It also focuses on his children, and their neighbors.

Mysterious Skin, a really f-ed up drama about a smalltown gay teenage hustler played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt (warning: there's a child molestation scene and a gay rape scene).

Secretary, where Maggie Gyllenhaal plays a masochistic secretary to James Spader's sadistic lawyer. (Do you see a theme here?)

When I think of more I'll let you know.
