All about wine

Fun post:

I recently discovered I like white wine. I haven't developed a taste for red yet.

So what kinds of wine do you like?

How do you make your sangria?

Funny story involving wine, please:

If you don't drink wine, please replace "wine" with "chocolate milk".

I also only discovered I liked white wine during last summer's wedding season. Like you, I still do not like red.

So what kinds of wine do you like? White. Reisling or Gewertztraminer are my favourites.

How do you make your sangria? I've never made it, but I'm fairly sure it just involves putting fruit into your wine and letting it sit for a while. Everyone seems to love it! I just haven't got around to making it before.

Funny story involving wine, please: I don't have anything really funny, but my team at work did a Christmas wine exchange where we each drew a name and dressed up the bottle like that person, then we all had to guess who the bottle was for. It was pretty fun, and the person who did my bottle did really well (not to mention, I really liked the wine I got - Sibling Rivalry White, I highly recommend it).

I'm allergic to lemon and lime so I have never had sangria. If anyone has a good recipe without those ingredients please share!

Dude, that's even worse than my lactose intolerance! I love lemon and lime!! I imagine you can replace it with something like grapefruit juice or orange juice? I dunno. I'm only good at following recipes haha.

I tried a white sangria at BJ's and I didn't like it. Then again, I don't think I've ever liked any of their drinks. Maybe I'll try that recipe. I think I saw a peach one while I was grabbing my link. Maybe that one doesn't have lemon/lime in it.

    Pinot Gris or Reisling.

How do you make your sangria?
I don't.  I just drink what others make.

Funny story involving wine, please: Most of my wine stories involve fuzzy memories but here's one:

University.  2007.  "Semi-Formal Wine Party" at another residence on campus.  Invite only.  My buddy and I were on our residence exec team so we got invited.  Then we discovered their stash of sparkling wine.  Then the sparkling wine started disappearing (into my tummy!!).  2 hours went by where we just sat and drank free sparkling wine.  Then somehow my buddy and I + their exec team + some other randoms ended up at the campus bar with several bottles of sparkling wine, in our cocktail dresses.  Then we found the Labbatt (beer company) rep and ended up on George Street <-- clicky and somehow I got home and into my bed....after a night on George.

Oh.  And I had two bottles of sparkling wine on my bed waiting for me when I got home.  Thanks, boys.

So what kinds of wine do you like?
Dry whites, and medium-bodied reds that have some fruitiness but not too much. Also, champagne or sparking white, the drier the better.

How do you make your sangria?
Don't really like sangria, sorry. I'm a margarita gal. (Cuervo Especial, fresh-squeezed lime juice, and triple sec, with salt on the rim.)

    Funny story involving wine, please:
One time, when I was in college and waiting tables in NY, I had a lady come in alone and order a ton of food. She was clearly an unhappy type of woman. She had one glass of wine, or rather, half a glass. When she was ready to leave, she asked me to put the rest of her wine into a to-go cup. (Um...seriously?!)

I told her I would ask. The bussers were responsible for packaging to-go/leftover meals, so I asked them about it. One said we couldn't do it, but due to the language barrier, didn't give me a real reason. I was kind of new at that point. Went back to the table and said I was very sorry, but we couldn't do that. (I later found out that it's illegal due to the open-container law.) She was practically in an outrage, complaining to me that she'd paid for a whole glass of wine, but couldn't finish it, blah, blah, blah.

While I was running her credit card to pay for the meal (somewhere around $35 with appetizers, main course, and wine), she managed to get one of the other bussers to agree to put the wine in a paper coffee cup. I brought back the receipt for her to sign, thanked her, wished her a good evening, and left to give her a chance to write in the tip or leave it in cash. A few minutes later, as I was walking back into the dining room, she was standing, ready to leave, and placing my tip in cash on the table: a whole two dollars. She started to walk away, then doubled back and took one of the dollar bills, leaving me with a one-dollar tip.

I was pissed at the time; I'd given her great service. But now I laugh my butt off at this memory. Biotches be crazy. Smile

So what kinds of Chocolate Milk do you like?
    I love chocolate soy milk.

How do you make your Chocolate milk?
I buy it pre-made and pour it in the glass.  VOILA!

Funny story involving Chocolate milk, please:

In kindergarten, I got in trouble for poking a hole in the bottom corner of my milk carton and sucking the milk out the bottom.  A lot of the kids did it, and we had recently been told not to.  The teacher made me go to the principal's office, but I was scared and crying so hard he couldn't discipline me.  He called me into his office the next day and gave me a balloon for being good.

So what kinds of wine do you like?
Reds: Merlot, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Savignon, Malbec, Shiraz, but Rioja is my favorite
    White: Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Albarino
Desert wines: Port, Sherry, Late Harvest whites.

How do you make your sangria?
From the recipe of my favorite bar in Sevilla:

    1 bottle of Rioja
2 cups of brandy (I like cherry brandy, but whatever you want - flavored vodka works well, too)
    1 cup of sugar
    1 orange
    1 lime
    Bottle of 7-Up (optional)
Chopped apples, pears, peaches, or strawberries

Slice the lime and orange into circles.  Soak all the fruit in the brandy or vodka with the sugar.  Let sit several hours, or overnight.  Add the red wine.  You can add the 7-Up if you want to, but only right before serving to taste (you won't need the whole bottle, but I love the bubbles in my sangria).

    Funny story involving wine, please:
BF was stressed out and klutzy yesterday.  I came home to find that he had broken two dishes while putting away the dishwasher, cracked a glass by bumping it against the wall, and accidentally knocked over one of my hurricane jars that hold candles in our mock-fireplace and had to sweep up the glass shards.

Needless to say, it was a messy day for him, and he didn't need me to get mad about it all since he was already pissed at himself!  So I laughed at it, and asked him to sit on the couch and let me prepare dinner so he didn't break anything valuable.  And he goes, "I know, I don't want to break any of your nice dishes."  I said, "No, I can deal with the dishes.  I'm afraid the next thing you'll break is YOU, and I can't deal with you being broken!"  It made him laugh and loosen up a bit, since he was a bit high strung (I swear I'm getting to the wine bit).

So I went in the kitchen to cook dinner, and started to pour him a bottle of wine, and it slipped out of my hand and crashed on the ground, showering the floor with glass and red wine everywhere.  A whole 3 seconds went by where we were both silent and just staring at each other, and then we both burst into laughing/crying fits.  It was pretty funny, and we decided that we needed to go to sleep for the night before we hurt ourselves.

So what kinds of wine do you like?
    Anything that is slightly sweet

How do you make your sangria?
Haven't ever made any, but if I have wine that is too dry for my taste buds then I add cranberry juice which makes it very yummy.

    Funny story involving wine, please:
While I was in France we went to a winery at 11am.The owner gave us some olive bread that we could snack on while we were wine tasting, but we were all pretty hungry. By the end, Gaye, our french teacher was taking pictures of her fingernails and skipping as we walked to the nearest bus stop. Everyone ended up taking a three hour nap before dinner. Here is one of the girls in a bookcase after we got back.

SeaTea, try my favorite peach sangria:

1 bottle red wine (merlot or cab sav is best, IMO)
    Peach schnapps
    Peach vodka
    Diced peach
    Sugar
    Club soda (optional)

Soak the peaches in the schnapps and vodka with sugar.  Add the wine, and as much club soda as you want.

Good timing! Boyfriend and I just finished our last bottle with dinner this weekend, I am supposed make a list for him so he can go restock. Here are the wines I am asking for (I'm including labels, because that is how I remember wines):

I generally tend towards wines from Chile because they are usually a bit sweeter, and are a bit easier on my wallet. This is a Savingon Blanc from Lapostolle that I like, it goes for about $13.

I grew up in the Finger Lakes region, so I like to buy from there. Though I have to say, I'm not sure how easy these would be to find outside of New York state. At any rate, two Rieslings that I like from the Finger Lake region are by Salmon Run and Hosmer. They both go for about $13 as well (can you tell my price point by now? lol)

Edit: I forgot my (white wine) sangria recipie. I stole it from About.com, but I've served it a number of times and it's always a hit
    :
    • 1 Bottle of your favorite white wine (This recipe is just as delicious with a good red wine, if you so choose)
    • 1 Lemon cut into wedges
    • 1 Orange cut into wedges
    • 1 Lime cut into wedges
    • 1 Peach cut into wedges
    • 1 Cup sliced strawberries
    • 1/2 Cup lemonade or limeade
    • 1/2 Cup Sugar
    • 2 shots of apricot, peach or "berry" flavored brandy
    • 2 Cups ginger ale
    • Optional: one can of diced pineapple pieces with juice

No, seriously, I don't measure.  I do it by taste - schnapps tastes better than vodka, so I do a bit more schnapps, but it'll be sicky sweet if you don't add the vodka (in my opinion).  So probably 1/4 cup of vodka, 1/2 cup of schnapps?  You can play around with it, and you can always add more after you blend it.  The soaking with the fruit is to mellow out the taste of the alcohol in the fruit - you end up with little alcoholic delicious bites of peach floating in your cup.

So what kinds of wine do you like?
Pretty much any white as long as it's not oaky... ick. Sweet reds/roses, too. And I mean super sweet, like muscadine.

How do you make your sangria?
Mmmm, sangria... Olive Garden's is the best, though Ruby Tuesday makes some good ones, too. If I buy a red that's not sweet enough to drink straight, I'll make 'sangria' by mixing it with whatever juice I've got around. I've tried it with orange tangerine and with white grape.

    Funny story involving wine, please:
The one and only time I got drunk, it was off of wine. I can't remember what kind, but it was a sweet white, either a Riesling or Liebefraumilch. Someone else was pouring, so my two glasses were more equivalent to four or five. I was sitting and chatting while sipping and had to get up to go to the bathroom. I promptly staggered and almost fell as the drunk feeling suddenly hit all at once. Sorry, that's the funniest I've got :(

I love all wine.  No funny stories though, unless you count the time that BF got drunk of some red wine and stood in the kitchen with his pants down (boxers still on) and proudly smiling until someone noticed him.  We were all laughing.

There was another time that he went to use the bathroom but someone was already in it, with the door open.  He came out all sad that someone was on the pot, but his willy was hanging out for the whole party to see! He didn't notice until I started shrieking about it haha.  I guess I do have some funny wine stories.

I cannot get myself to like red wine. I really like reisling. My Mom and I got some from the Biltmore that was quite yummy. I like cheap wine. BF was embarrassed one day when we went to Walmart and I (loudly) exclaimed "Look! Two dollar wine!"

I also only tried reisling because BF's Mom loves it. I wanted to be a suck up.

Honestly, I just started liking wine about two months ago. Before that, I hated it.

My friend made me sangria with white wine and I loved it. After that, I just tried a random white wine and found that I liked it. Once you like one, it's easier to branch out and I like it more the more I drink it.

What I like: I started out liking whites as well... Riesling and Gewertztraminer being the favorites. Now I also enjoy Pinot Grigio and know that I wholeheartedly detest Chardonnay (it's interesting that no one listed that as one of their favorites). My hands-down favorite Riesling was one I tried at Emeril's restaurant in the MGM Grand in Vegas - Monchoff. I was able to find it a few years ago for about $16 but haven't seen it since.

In the last year or two I've started enjoying reds as well. This weekend we had an awesome blend - Merlot, Malbec and Shiraz. It was so tasty. Usually I find reds too dry for my taste, but that one was nice and light with a little fruitiness. It was called Fleur de Lyeth for anyonoe that wants to try it.

Sangria: I like to drink it, but have never made it.

Funny wine story: They all seem funny at the time but right now, the best ones are escaping me. I seem to remember one afternoon where I had a glass of wine at lunch, then had another, and another, and ended up ditching work for the rest of the day and ended up running into my boss at a bar at 7pm. Luckily he was a raging alcoholic, so he didn't care that I'd gone AWOL to drink. Good times in NOLA.

I love all red wine with the exception of Merlot.

I make sangria my friends loooove and rave about.  EVERY time I make it, people ask me for the recipe.  It's simple.

    1 bottle red wine
    1 cup peach schnapps
    1 cup triple sec
1/3 bottle of juice (love the V8 fruit blends for this)
Various fruits, cut up (strawberries, apples, oranges, etc)

Put everything into a pitcher and serve over ice with a dash of cinnamon on top.  You can adjust the measurements to your personal taste.  If you don't like peach, use cherry schnapps instead.

If you want to make a large batch (which is what I usually do), here are the proportions:

3 large bottles red wine (1.5 litres, I use Concha y Toro merlot/cabernet blend; it's inexpensive and great for sangria)
1 750 ml bottle peach schnapps
1 750 ml bottle triple sec
    1 whole bottle juice

Same directions as above.  This makes a LOT of sangria!  I made this for a bachelorette party and we drank it by the pool all day and into the early evening.  Tongue out

I don't really have any funny wine stories except that I received a total of 12 wine glasses for Christmas; tells you how much I like wine!

For those of you who like the sweeter white wines (Riesling, etc), you have to try this one.  I worked at the Melting Pot in college as a bartender and it was by far our biggest seller.  You can find it at Total Wine if you have them in your area.
