I didn't want a diamond from the beginning. FI knew I wanted a gemstone. I thought I wanted a garnet until I saw the aquamarine ring in the window and knew it was perfect. I think non-diamond engagement rings are more common, but I've still gotten stares, questions, and even pitying looks when I show off my ring. Bucking accepted traditions is not always easy. ;)

my friends just got engaged and her ring is a black sea pearl with a diamond band...it's not traditional at all, and while not my taste per se, it is soooo gorgeous

I guess I'm a "traditional" girl, because I've always wanted a diamond. While I love colored stones, I always loved the look of simple and clean diamonds. But if other stones work for other girls, more power to them. :)

I have a trinity bezel set blue diamond, with two white ones on the side.  It’s a little greener than a sapphire and I think it is very unique, simple and classic, I get lots of complements.  Really, get whatever YOU like, but beware that some of the colored stones are softer and will have to be replaced (depending on how often you wear it) over the years.  I went into ring shopping thinking I wanted amethyst!
