Diamond question!

Hi!  I'm  new here, and definitely guilty of lurking.  No ring for me yet, but I've been doing lots and lots of preliminary online shopping...    I'm wondering if you think diamond certifications - specifically grading reports - should play a role in picking out a ring?  Are certain labs better than others?  I've noticed that most of the diamonds I like are GIA-certified.  Any experiences/advice/knowledge/research on the subject is appreciated!!!

Certain labs are known for more generous grading. GIA and AGS are known for stricter standards.

GIA and AGS are probably the most well known, and the strictest of the labs. Diamonds certified by them will be slightly more expensive because it's assumed the grade is more reliable. I wouldn't be too worried about the lab. The differences between each level in a grade are very subtle and subjective.

pricescope.com is a good website to learn about diamonds. It taught me that I was a hearts & arrow girl.

Personally, if I were buying anything about a carat or bigger, I'd want a GIA or AGS certificate/grading report.

AGS is the stricktist in grading, an AGS0, ideal cut is what most diamond snobs desire, as they are the most realiable for being the best of the best, but you pay a premium price for it. GIA- IS Also highly regarded, but are cheaper than AGS, some experts say there grading standards on cut are not quiet as strict as AGS, so you will find more variety in quality within each range of cut. EGL is slighly less regarded than GIA, and slightly cheaper. I bought off the internet, and so in order to ensure good quality, I choose to go with AGS0. My best friend who bought in store got a beautiful EGL. Make sure you check out pricescope.com and their rocky talkie forum, where real experts, can answer your questions much better than me. Plus if you are buying a diamond online, if you are a pricescope member (you sign up for free) most internet jeweler vendors lower their prices by 200USD.

I'm a snob then, because I chose an AGS 000.

Thanks for all the input!  I did some investigating... Pricescope was a little overwhelming, but I learned a lot there!  I'm definitely making sure I get a diamond with a grading report - it just seems like a smart thing to have for such an important piece of jewelry. I wouldn't consider myself a diamond snob :), and from what I read about GIA, they seem to be the most reputable diamond-grading lab.  I like that they're up on diamond technology, and that they invented the diamond grading concept.Anyways, thanks for all the help!  It was nice to get some perspective from people with rings!  And Norway, thanks especially for the discount tip!
