I have to agree with most of the PP's on this one. I also had a promise ring, from a guy that I dated for almost 2 years, and the "promise" part, as far as I can tell, was this:

1) I promise to ignore your phone calls for days

2) I promise to drive 45 minutes out of my way every night to see my guys instead of 15 minutes on the way home to see you

3) I promise to not be seen with you in public

I got piece of jewelry that happened to be a ring from the FI about a year after we started dating just showing his seriousness about me. Neither one of us thought of it as a "promise" ring though, you can't promise to promise someone you will marry them.

Oh and then I had to stop wearing because the gold was really cheap and it broke my finger out really bad. But I still cherish the ring.
