Plastic Surgery

The post by aah in Hetshup's interrogation reminded me of a conversation I had with our crazy korean the other day. He asked me what kind of plastic surgery I wanted. It kind of took me by suprise because I had never even thought about plastic surgery.

According to him, plastic surgery is a very common thing in Korea. They mostly have surgeries on the face, and people usually get addicted to it. I equated it to tattoos here in the US, which he agreed with. He said that if you apply to a job in Korea, they strip you down to your underwear and check to see if you have tattoos.

What are your thoughts and feelings towards plastic surgery, tattoos, and the treatment of getting jobs in light of either of these?

I think as long as your are professoional about where you have your tattoos then it shouldn't interfere with getting a job. FI keeps his hidden and people are generally surprised that he has one.

I think you can add piercings to that one as well. A guy that I dated had piercings in his forehead. Normally he wore his hair long so you couldn't see them, but if the light caught the metal right it'd catch your attention. He ended up taking them out when we started going to interviews at law firms once he was done law school.

I dont' like doctors and surgeries or anything like that... so I wouldn't purposely have any procedures done. And although some people say that their tattoos didn't hurt, they couldn't be sure of that before they went in. So why in hell would I risk that?

I totally agree that tattoos and plastic surgeries can be addicting. it's like, once you get past the first one, the ones after it can seem like a breeze. And when does it end? There is always something that can be fixed and the surgeons will make sure to point the faults out to you because it'll make them money.

I don't understand why employers would care if potential employees had tattoos they couldn't see. I guess it has to do with a dislike of the subculture or what ever?
... Having said that, pretty much every book I've read so far that takes place in the future involves noticeable tattoos (like on the face0 being totally normal. I can see our future going in that direction.

I'm not a fan of either. In my life now, I don't want a tattoo. I'm not going to say never because I might feel differently in a few years, possibly not, but who knows!

Unless I was in a horrible accident and my face was inhuman-like, I would never get plastic surgery...God made me this way for a reason and I'm happy with the way I look.

I think it's extreme to strip down to find tattoos, if they aren't visible while wearing clothes, who cares?

I would like a tattoo. It will be on my side/back, on my ribs. So perfectly cover-able when wearing normal clothes. I like tattoos, as long as they are tasteful (too bad many are not). I think they're becoming a lot more mainstream, and don't really carry the same stigma they used to.

As for plastic surgery...I would like plastic surgery. I have something weird going on with my right eyelid, so my eyes appear 2 very different sizes when I smile. I hate it. It's kind of unattractive in pictures. I would like that fixed, but I probably won't ever do it. We'll see. Also, plastic surgery for medical reasons is completely OK (ie A friend of mine had a cartilage issue in her nose which made it difficult for her to breathe. She had to have a nose job to repair the cartilage.)

I do think there is a line with all tattoos and plastic surgery. A couple is OK, but when you start getting work (of any kind) done all over your body, you've gone too far IMO.

I have wanted a nose job for a while now, not because I think it will make me prettier or make people think I'm cuter blah blah blah. It's a personal reason, I want a nose job because of my own self image issues with it. BF tells me every day how much he loves my nose, how he never would change a thing about me, and how beautiful he thinks I am. I know he would be upset if I did get a nose job but in the end it's not his decision it is  mine. I have dealt with image issues because of my nose since I was young.

In the end, I probably will not get a nose job because it does fit my face and it fits me very well. I am so lucky to have a guy who tells me everyday how beautiful I am and how much he loves me exactly for who I am.

I do plan on getting a boob job though. Ha.

I don't think I would ever get a tattoo. There is nothing that I can think of that I would want displayed on my body forever. I'm not against other people having them (BF has 5), but I don't personally want any.

For now, plastic surgery is not something I can imagine wanting. I hope that I can appreciate looking my age throughout my life. With that being said, I have no idea how I will feel later in life about it. (I don't really think you can know in your 20's if you'll want to change anything in your 40's or 50's.) I am not against anyone having surgery, but I would hope that they have really taken the time to make sure it's the right decision for themselves and also to research the procedure, side effects and complications before hand.

I don't feel anyone should be judged on their outward appearance for any reason when they apply for a job. However, let's be realistic here. People pass judgement all of the time. There is no way to know what characteristics people will judge you by (tattoos, plastic surgery or otherwise). Hopefully if you are true to yourself, people will want to hire you because of your confidence and strong self identity.

Tattoos and piercings (other than ears) aren't really my thing.  I don't judge others who have them, but for me, a tattoo is too big of a commitment.  Since I change my mind on a near-daily basis, it would be impossible for me to avoid tattoo-regret.  Piercings, I know, aren't such a big deal.  I had my navel pierced when I was a teenager, but it's pretty much healed over now.

As for plastic surgery, I really want facial liposuction someday (soon!).  I have a fat face from a combination of genetics and medical steriod use at a young age.  I hate my double chin and huge cheeks.

I do have a tattoo that I keep covered practically all the time. I told him that and he couldn't believe it; he was totally shocked. There is definitely a lifestyle judgement placed on people with tattoos.

I feel that it is understandable for companies to be selective based on looks, but I think that is mostly because they also want to portray a good image to customers. Although I do feel that if its out of sight it shouldn't be an issue.

With the plastic surgery, I feel that if it would drastically change your comfort level or some self esteem issues then it is understandable, but just for fun seems a little much. I guess thats where the different cultures come in.

When you really start to think about it, plastic surgery and making your body look better should be what people gravitate towards instead of adding ink to it.

Thanks for all of your replies. I really just wanted to get a broader scope of how other people felt about it.

I've wanted a tattoo for a while now, but I'm not sure where I would put it.  I don't think it would be good for me professionally to have it anywhere visible, but I kinda feel like, if it's not visible, what's the point?

As for plastic surgery, if someone was like, "Hey, you won plastic surgery!  What do you want?"  I'd take lipo on the neck, tummy, arms, and thighs.  I'd have a boob job.  Oh, and I'd definitely get botox.

Of those things, the only thing I would probably seek out would be botox...and that's just because I'm a little weirded out about developing my very first "worry wrinkle".

I'd get both.  I have a tattoo about the size of two fists on my right leg.  I'd get plastic surgery.  I'm looking into getting a breast reduction after I have another crotch spawn.  As for body mods, I have piercings in places most people wouldn't dream of.  I want to get more tattoos.  My uncle owns a shop here, so it's just a matter of what and when.  More likely it'll probably be after I shed some pounds.  I don't see it as a problem right now, since I don't work and it is more main stream than it was before.  I'm not worried about it.
    I'm not good at feelings.

I have no problems with tattoos on other people, but I don't think they're for me. I can't think of anything I like enough to put on my body permanently. I do like piercings a little bit more. I have a navel piercing, and I've considered getting surface piercings on my chest. I decided against it in the end, because I know I'll have to work in a professional environment. I don't want piercing outlines or the piercings themselves showing through a shirt.

Plastic surgery is something I might consider. I don't want anything drastic; just a small nose job. My nose doesn't look very big from the front, but it's definitely easy to see in profile. I feel like it's very distracting in any photo where I'm turned to the side, and I think it takes away from the rest of the photo. Also, noses only get bigger as people get older.  I'm super scared of medical related things, so I'm not sure I would ever go through with it, even if I had the money.

I have had a breast augmentation so I understand wanting a procedure to make you more happy with your body.  I don't agree with multiple procedures though unless like other girls have said that it's medically necessary.  But to each their own.  I don't think anyone should be judged for that decision.
As far as tattoos I also agree that unless they are exposed during the job, you should not be discriminated against because you have them.  I can't believe in Korea they strip you down to check, wow!

    I have/have had both.
I am 63 inches tall and my chest was 53 inches around, so I had breast reduction surgery 10 years ago in Jan.  I would do it over again in a heartbeat.  It helped with my career being on my feet all the time and helped with my barely there self esteem issues.  (The last thing I want/need is people staring at me).
Tattoos...I have 8.  Some are visible (top of my feet and wrist) but they're not offensive at all.  I will admit, being in education, I get a side eye from a LOT of people.  I don't get it at all.  I am a very well educated person who happens to be artistic and likes to showcase it.  I do plan on getting more, but I will keep in mind my career choice and keep them low key.

I might get a breast reduction someday, but in my case it would be medical because they're of a size to possibly cause back problems.  For those of you who've had breast reductions, how did everything go?  Are you happy with the results?

I got implants about three years ago.  I did my best to keep my employers from knowing about it.
(I worked two jobs, an office job and a bartending job.)  The bartending job knew because I had to take off longer there, and I came back with lifting restrictions.  Office did not know.

    Those hiring practices sound horrible.

I have no tattoos, but I want one.  I want it on my back, it will be hidden by normal clothing.
