Dog Breed Suggestions?

Re: Dog Breed Suggestions?

  • I'm really glad everyone else chimed in on this.
  • Allusive - I totally hear you on that.  My parents have a toy poodle, and we cannot say the word "Ball" around her, it has to be spelled, or she goes ballistic.  She also can sniff out one of those things anywhere.  We took her on a car trip a couple years ago, and my parents put a ball in the car for her to chase when we stopped.  She spent HOURS trying to find the damned thing.  Had it not been locked in a compartment, she'd have had it instantly.

Zip - I actually would like to know more about the bulldog issues.  BF is dying to get one.

And, the only statement I'll make on picking out a dog from a breeder (my parents did it), is that sometimes you can get lucky.  We picked out our toy poodle when she was 6 weeks old.  Mom picked her because of all of the puppies, she was the one trying to get into everything.  6 years later, she's jealous as all hell, but she's active, and cuddly and everything anyone could have ever expected.  She's also brilliant.  But, I think we got lucky.

Fiyero is the craziest, smartest more enjoyable dog we have ever had. As long as you have the time to train and exercise them they are just little personalities!!!

From a hound guardian, don't discredit all hounds. Look into some hound rescues in your area and they can direct you to dogs that are quiet and don't tend to howl.

You can get a better idea of a dog's personality when you go through a rescue that has had the dog in a foster home. That foster parent will know the dogs quirks including whether it is housetrained, crate trained, likes kids, likes cats etc.

I'm currently fostering a pure bred black and tan coonhound that the breeder dropped off at a shelter because he was the runt. He does this with EVERY litter. All the other pups he sells between $1700-2700.

I have a black and tan coonhound /treeing walker named Eli. We ended up getting him from a woman whose female was pregnant when they got her with out knowing. just Ann amazing dog. The only thing with him is he is to smart for his own good. He can be very stubborn when he wanted to do something but still just an amazing dog. What is funny is no one I have ever talked to know his breed, so I must say this is a first!
