Hand Sanitizer

Dear. Gawd. I just used an "all natural" hand sanitizer that was lying around the office, and now I smell STRONGLY of pine needles/noxious gases. Already lotioned my hands and tried a Clorox disinfecting wipe...any ideas how to get rid of this? Opinions on hand sanitizer in general? Other adventures in your Friday mornings, good, bad, ugly?

I'd say put a cup of coffee in front of your nose. Or wash your hands with soap and water?

Thanks, niknik! I sense that this smell is going to take a few washes to get rid of...and of course, I work in a teeny office that doesn't have its own bathroom, so I have to go kind of far to the bathroom. Sigh. I'm whiny this morning.

Hand sanitizer is WICKED for cleaning stuff. No word of a lie - I use it to clean white boards, my fridge door handle and cupboard doors (cause of all those messy germy hands on 'em). I also take it on vacay so I KNOW I have clean hands when I eat/after the washroom/etc.

Nice. I'm going to have to try that sometime, Paige! I love it when I get my hands on a cleaning product that works like magic. :)

It's funny b/c it was something I stumbled on by accident! I had no cleaning products in residence, but I had hand sanitizer. I figured it *might* clean my whiteboard off. When it did I started trying it on other things. It's great if you've got surfaces that aren't delicate (don't use it on hardwood. Ooops...)

My office smells like bacon. I searched for the source, but the only food product I saw being consumed at 8 am was a bag of Doritos. Bacon probably smells better than your hand sanitizer, Marley.

Yep, I'd imagine so. Bacon sounds great right now, ha.

I put a little warning note on it for any future users:

"This hand sanitizer will make you smell like rancid pine sap...just fair warning." I'm funny like that.

I know it doesn't belong to anyone in this office--had to have been left behind by a customer. So I know I'm not risking offending anyone.

Bacon only smells good when you're eating it. Not when you're tracking the smell down like a blood hound.

I don't use hand sanitizer. I do however, wash my hands. I don't have anything that is antibacterial in my house.

Try washing your hands with hot water, and then lotion 'em up! In the future, if you are using hand sanitizer, make sure you use alcohol based ones.

And our office smells like bacon all the time! It's because the sandwich shop around the corner makes BLTs.

Marley, I feel you on not wanting to walk. A lot of mornings I don't go upstairs to the kitchenette at work to clean the coffeepot and my mug. I go to the icky icky bathroom down the hall. It involves a complicated system of paper towels (b/c I'm a bit of a germaphobe), but somehow I think it's less work than going upstairs???

But yeah, you should go wash those puppies a couple times to get rid of the stench. :)

I love hand sanitizer! As someone who works in school with kids, hand sanitizer is amazing! Nothing is worse than a kid sneezing all over their hand then grabbing yours!!

LOL, desert, that's hilarious. I would totally do the same thing. Today, it wasn't so much the not wanting to walk as the not wanting to walk combined with the other aspect of trekking to the bathroom: I was alone in the office, so I would have had to lock up, put up the "Back in 5 Minutes" sign, and take my keys to the bathroom. Which seems like a hassle.

I went to the bathroom and washed my hands with the soap, and things are much better now. :) I'm eating a pizza Lunchable from the convenience store! I haven't had one of these since, like, third grade. It's kind of awesome and was only $2.39. I'm small enough that kids' portions are just the right size for me, anyway.

Thanks for all the thoughts and advice, gals!

Hetshup, I know people who say antibacterial stuff isn't worth it because it encourages superbacteria to form or something, which was one of the reasons I was interested to get some opinions.

I really dislike all hand sanitizer, and I also doubt how effective the 'all natural' or alcohol free ones can be.

I think if it was that smelly, I'd have trekked to the bathroom and washed my hands a couple times. Then lotioned them b/c our soap smells gross.

Can you get your hands on lemon or lime juice? That tends to kill odors quickly.

Friday is great so far! Woke up early to get to the gym with FI and a friend. I made egg salad and I'm watching "Clueless" on HBO and fooling around with my new phone.

Update on the school thing: my mom suggested I go and talk to the GM at the radio station I used to deejay at, whom I still have a good relationship with, to see if going to this vocational program will actually help me or I'm flushing money down the toilet. I agree with her. So I'm going to do that next week.

A lot of hand sanitizers bother me with their smell - I have mild asthma and perfumes are a big trigger for me. I've found that Germ-X is the best for me - it's a pretty mild odor and doesn't seem to bother me.

If you have any baking soda anywhere, wash your hands with a sprinkle of it - should get rid of the smell.
