When did you know...

that Santa wasn't real?? How old were you? How did you find out?

I was 7... After 3 years of failed attempts by my father to 'catch' Santa on video I started to wonder why it never worked... Then, the day after Christmas 1988, I was re-reading the letter that "Santa" had left for me... and it dawned on me!! The letter was written in my fathers hand-writing!! So, I pulled out the letters from they year before (yes I saved them) and I realized that those letters were all written by my mother!

So, I walked into the living room and declared "THERE IS NO SANTA!" and my parents tried desperately to convince me otherwise... but I had PROOF!! LOL

I was like Nancy Drew up-in-dat-biotch!!  LOL

I have tried to think about this and I honestly can't remember when I didn't believe in him anymore.  I think I just kind of grew out of it and was like "eh, oh well" about it all.  I definitely wasn't a dramatic experience or I feel like I would remember it.

I don't remember the age, but I had been questioning it, and then on Christmas morning my step-dad ruined it. He told me TWICE that he helped my mom pick out my roller-blades that were from Santa.

I always knew. I mean, it doesn't matter to me because I'm Jewish, but I remember at five years old going "a fat man with a beard that comes into your house and gives you presents? That's stupid."

I was a very precocious child.

Wait?! You mean he's not real?! *scarred*

Actually, to be honest, I don't remember ever believing in Santa. It wasn't for lack of trying on my parents side, they never really gave it away or anything, I just never did.

I don't remember actually. It didn't really affect me.

My papa still gives me gifts "from Santa". Apparently Santa brings me birthday gifts too because I'm special like that ;)

we still celebrate the spirit of Santa by hanging out stockings and filling them for each other.  except my brother, he's still 5 years old when it comes to getting/giving gifts.

My family still has 'santa' since my sister is seven.  I remember in 4th grade my mom told me and I was heartbroken. No one else believed in Santa in my class at that point, and I was always sticking up for him.  It was pretty embarassing.

LMAO! Me too, and also at 5. I had to ask my mom who Santa was because I had no idea what the kids in kindergarten were talking about (I also went to an all-Jewish preschool, so this was my first interaction with kids who weren't).</div>

I was around 7 or 8 years old, and I was trying to prove it wasn't Santa.  I requested a fingerprinting kit for Christmas, and went around finger printing everyone.  My parents knew what I was up to, though, so they used gloves while doing the letter.  And they always wrote in small capital letters while doing the Santa letters, so when I tried to compare handwriting (which was my next step when the letter had no fingerprints), I couldn't match it up.

Then the following year, my Dad cut out an article from "Dear Annie" in the newspaper and handed it to me.  It was about how parents over-play Santa.  Then he went in the bathroom while I read it.  And I remember going to the door of the bathroom and saying, "What does this mean?" and he said, "What do you think it means?" and I looked glumly at the paper and said, "That Santa's not real?"

I remember it was rather melancholic to find out the truth.  Like I wanted to be proven wrong, that he really did exist!  My parents put on a very good show, though!

I keep telling my 'sister' that it might be time to let my 10 year old niece know that Santa's not real... All the kids in her class know and she's the only one saying "and Santa got me...."

A very pitiful 'Santa' came to Christmas on my Dad's side.

He wasn't the greatest impersonator, and it was pretty obvious that my uncle left, Santa visited, and the uncle came back after Santa left.

I've never told him, but he ruined it for me.

I was 6 and my older cousins told me. When I asked my mom about it she told me the truth. But I love Santa. I was so bummed this year to learn that my 11 year old sister doesn't believe in Santa anymore. But we are still doing stockings from Santa which I appreciate. Stockings have always been my favorite part of Christmas.

Im to sure how old I was. It was probably around 6-7 years of age. I woke up in the middle of the night on christmas eve, while my parents were moving the presents from the closet to the foot of the tree. I was mortified. I had no idea what was going or what was happening. I had thought all these years that santa was legit as we never had gifts under the tree, until the actual christmas day....until that day.

I don't really remember when I stopped believing in Santa. Apparently though, my oldest sister was a biotch and when she found out when she was 8, she made sure my other sister and I knew he wasn't real too...I was 4.

I think I was about 7.  I was snooping in my mother's closet for my Christmas presents.  Then I came across some packages addressed to me and my brother "From Santa".

I found out the Tooth Fairy wasn't real in an even better way.  My brother had just lost a tooth and the next morning my mom and I were making breakfast.  I must have been about 6.  Then my mom says, "Oh Shiit.  I forgot to put money under your brother's pillow."  Then she handed me 5 dollars and asked me if I could hurry up and do it for her before my brother woke up.

I was 8. I don't know what prompted it, but on Christmas Eve I got out of bed, went up to my mom, dad, and grandparents and just asked, "So is Santa actually real?"

Not wanting to outright lie to me my mom just conceded that no, he was not. She says she expected me to be heartbroken but instead I just nodded and said, "Okay," then went back to bed.

When I was 6 or 7, I hit the back of my head on a dresser and it knocked out both of my front teeth.  Mom was pretty busy, and forgot.  The tooth fairy was a few days late, and after the excuse I figured it out.

I promise, my childhood was not as tragic and depressing as this thread has made it sound.

I was 5 when I found out there was no Santa. My dad dressed as a Santa and went around our neighborhood giving presents. When I saw him I thought it was funny that he looked like my daddy. Then an older kid (I think age 9) told me that it was really my dad. Then my dad tried to go away and wait for all of the kids to get back inside their homes before coming home, but the kids kept following him. That got so bad that parents had to force the kids inside their houses. Then there was no denying for me. But it was't traumatic at all. I felt very mature after that.
