Anyone want to look at more (wedding) dresses?

This time I went to David's Bridal and had my BFF go with me. We didn't try on as many dresses. It was kinda busy and the consultant disappeared a lot. I did get to try on the one that I loved online though. I liked it, but I'm not all that thrilled with the fabric. I think I'm going to have to keep looking, which is fine with me!

Don't mind my red face. It gets red any time I get attention, lol.

A

It's comfortable and pretty, but still casual and cute. The fabric feels kinda papery though and it may not be the most flattering, but I like the style.

B

I like this one too. I think I like the bow on dress A better than the flower on this one. This one also doesn't have pockets like dress A. I do like the material better, but I like the sweetheart neckline better on dress A.

C

I'm not a fan of this neckline and I feel as though it's missing some kind of accent like a belt or something. What do you guys think of mermaid style on me? I kinda think it's neat, but I'd have to lose some weight (not very flattering sideways) and it's kinda hard to walk in because it's tight around the thighs, lol. This one was a bit too small for me though.

D

I'm not really feeling this one, but wanted to put it up for you ladies anyhow. I again would prefer the sweetheart neckline, but I wanted to try the asymetrical thing again. I liked it better on the other dress from the other store. This one just doesn't do it for me.

I still don't think I've found THE dress, but I feel like I am even closer to figuring out what I like, which is a good thing. I'd like to know honest opinions of what looks good and what doesn't or if I'm not trying something that you think would look good, throw out some suggestions and I'll try them next time I go look at dresses (Saturday).

Our ceremony is going to be outside too, if that makes a difference.

    YAY!
    I tried on A and B too!
And my gal pal is getting C!

I think the necklines in A and B look best on you, but I also love sweetheart necklines, so I may be biased.

I thought A was pulled off nicely here: http://theknottybride.com/18783
I'm considering this dress, which is like A: Mimi

I dunno you that well but I like B on your figure best.

I love dress A. I think you should get that one :) And if you don't, you should definitely get one with that style.

I'm not crazy about D, but that fitted-through-the-hip silhouette is my favorite on you. A is cute, but you have a great figure that you've worked really hard for, so I would like to see you show it off a little more. Just my two cents.

Okay.  Ex-"expert" popping in here.  :)  I like those dresses, but I agree that I don't think they're your dress.

Girlfran, STFU about needing to lose more weight to rock the mermaid.  If the salon I used to work for can routinely order that style dress in like, size 28 and make it look AWESOME, then you and your skinny-mini-awesome bod is going to look HAWT.  Honestly, I hate those dresses on skinny girls.  You got the curves.  You show off that hourglass figure.

That being said, I love the sweetheart neckline for you.  I also love the idea of big ruching instead of skinny ruching, if you want to do any at all.  So, not knowing budget, and being only familiar with a few designers that the salon carries, I present to you what I would like to put you in:

(Also, keep in mind that since the Spring 2012 dresses are coming out now, it's trunk show season!!  Which means you may be able to stretch your budget just a smidge farther and get a great deal on a dress!)

    Paloma Blanca 3906 (with a belt), 4115
    Mikaella 15111508
    Romona Keveza LegendsL252

    Numbers are clickies.

And that's just my two cents.  We'll all love whatever you pick out.  :)

ETA:  Ely, the PB3906 and RK dresses are dupioni silk.  Which is awesomesauce in a fall wedding.  The two Mikaellas are satin...and it feels like butter.  :)

I really like the style of the first dress.   But I agree with everyone else that you should go for something more figure-showing.  You look great in all of those dresses and should show off those curves!!

I agree with pretty much everyone else. I love the neckline of A, and it's certainly cute (plus, pockets on a dress are a HUGE selling point for me!), but I think you should show off that hot bod you've worked so hard for!

I really like the silhouette of the last one Peek posted, but maybe something with that shape in a sweetheart neckline? I really like the sweetheart on you. :)

I think I'm in the minority here but I absolutely love B on you!!!

I like the look of A, but I wonder... do they have any in that style (or a similar one) in a bit more flowly material?  I've seen a similar dress made with chiffon (at least, I believe that was the fabric) and it looked awesome.  I don't think you look bad in anything that you tried on though.  Have fun shopping on Saturday :)

Sorry to post and run last night, but FI got home from his meeting and I hadn't seen him all day and then we went to bed.

Ok, so I definitely won't rule out the mermaid style then, lol. And I think we all agree that the sweetheart neckline is a must! : )

Peek: I love that first dress you posted. I think I'm more of a "ruffles girl" than I thought I would be, lol.

And thank you all for telling me I don't need to lose weight. I am getting happy with where I'm at, but still would like to tone up and lose a bit more in the gut area, lol. I should have gotten a picture sideways in the mermaid dress. My BFF that went with me has an eating disorder and a skewed idea of what looks good, so she was talking me out of that one and anything form fitting actually. The only issue with a mermaid style is that if I get one and it's tight on my thighs, stairs are going to be hard and I have to climb up some stairs for the ceremony. Do you think it would be an issue in a dress that fits?

Rdr: There is something about B that keeps drawing me back in. It's so hard to pick just one because I like something about each one, lol. Some day I'm going to find one that has everything I want, right? lol

I think A is cute--but you should totally rock the mermaid style--you look great in it. (Though I don't quite like this particular DB dress on you, just kind of "eh," the style on you is great). You have worked too hard to cover up how awesome you work. Rock the confidence, girl, you own that style, just maybe not that dress. :)

Alyaki: I think I would prefer that dress if much more if it were in a nicer fabric. I wasn't really impressed with how the skirt laid.

But, now people are giving me a bit more confidence to try a more form fitting style, lol. Maybe I'll just have to try to make a cute little dress like style A for every day wear and then get something more elegant for the wedding!

Rdr: I've only been to two bridal shops so far, so I guess I'm only just getting started, but I'm sure you're right about finding "THE" dress. I definitely don't want to regret the dress, and I still have a few months to look around so I think I'll just take my time and wait for that a-ha moment! : )

I like being able to show you girls the dresses though. I always wish I could show FI, but I don't even want to show him the vetoed dresses because he has never seen me in anything remotely that dressy, so I want to kinda wow him when he sees me in it for the first time. I think I'd go crazy if I couldn't show people though, lol. I am showing my BFF because she went with me and my mom because she's going to buy it for me, but other than that, I'd like to keep it from everyone else too. I also like that you guys can give me honest answers.

The other girl trying on her wedding dress had like 6 bridesmaids and her mom and another girl with her and she would do something and they'd all go "Oohh!, Ahh!" and nobody had any constructive criticism, lol. I am so happy my BFF isn't like that, but our tastes aren't really similar either.

Now I'm rambling, so I'm gonna stop, lol.

<div>The Paloma?  Or the first Mikaella?</div><div>
</div><div>In my experience, there are very few dresses where that really is a problem.  Generally, when you get measured, they measure your bust, waist, hi hip and low hip.  In a mermaid, your low hip measurement is generally the one that makes or breaks your size.  They'll match your measurements to a size chart, show you where you fall (if they don't do it automatically, ask to see your measurements on the chart), and then pick the size that they think is best.  You will have some freedom to pick what you want though.  So, say you're a 14 in the hips, if you're worried it will be too tight, you can opt for the 16.  And they can absolutely take the dress in.  It's a thousand times easier to take in than let out.  So remember, just because the sample is tight doesn't mean that the actual dress you order is going to be as tight.  :)</div>

I've gotten bridesmaid dresses before, but I just found one off the rack and had it taken in. Does it vary from shop to shop how much they can take in a size? The first lady I saw said her seamstress took in a 14 to a 4, but DB says 2 sizes I think.

<div>I'm not going to pull a Cate and completely trash DB, but seriously, they suck in comparison to a lot of places.  Having been in the industry, if that's what you want and what you're looking for, I respect that.  But if you can afford to go to a better salon, I highly recommend it.</div><div>
</div><div>That being said, I've watched alterations staff do AMAZING things to a dress.  But it depends on how comfortable your seamstress is.  The women I worked with had been doing bridal alterations for 15+ years.  They knew what they were doing, and they rocked at it.  Every designer is different, every fabric is different.  Half the battle is knowing the limitations of what you're working with.  If you go to a salon and are looking at a dress, if they have a seamstress on site, ask to talk to her.  Chances are that while your consultant is going to be able to tell you what she's seen done in the past on that dress, the seamstress can tell you exactly what she can do, and whether or not your vision is out of control.  I once had a girl who loved a dress but hated the seam on the edge of the hem.  She wanted to make it a bubble hem.  So, we dragged the seamstress out, and she flat out told her that if her dress had to have a bubble hem, then she needed to find another dress, because it just wasn't going to be worth the extra cost that it would have taken.  We found her perfect dress 10 minutes later.</div>

I tried on A at Davids Bridal and thought the fabric was kinda cheap and papery - and my bust is too huge for that low of a sweetheart.

That makes sense. The lady that said her seamstress has done a 14 to a 4 also said she's been doing it for 25 years. Honestly, I liked the dress from DB, but I'm not completely sold. I think I'll keep looking around.

I'm not really sure what I want around the dress, but I just like the look of having a separation right under the bust of some kind. Either that or I like when the fabric for the bust runs up and down and the fabric around the waist runs side to side or at an angle. Some kind of separation between the two is good, I guess, lol.

I wasn't all that thrilled with the papery feel of the first dress either. I am not familiar with all of the different types of fabric, but that one isn't my favorite. Seventh Anniversary 2500 Comments Combo Breaker
    edited December 2011
I have no idea what she likes in a dress as far as neckline or whatever, but I imagine it's going to be hard for her to find something. Luckily for her, or unluckily, she has lots of time. She just broke up with her boyfriend. They were only together for 1 month though. She's had a rough few years. Eating disorder, huge doctor bills, early menopause, lack of love life, crazy parents/brothers, hated her post-college job, and just got let go from her most recent job. Now she has no money and has to move in with her aunt and uncle to try to get back on her feet. I feel bad for her, but don't think there's anything I can do to help. She's to the point now where she knows what she wants for a wedding, but is starting to doubt she'll ever have one (meaning she's afraid she'll never find someone special).

Most dresses come in at least white and ivory.

Romona Keveza has a black dress as well.  :)
