Slow Start to the Week

I was thinking how slow it was around here and then I realized that it was President's Day in the US. Ontario also has a holiday, but unfortunately it doesn't apply to me. Boo!

How was everyone's weekend? If you have a holiday today, what are you up to?

My weekend could have been better, but I was glad to have some time to relax. My plan for the holiday today is to hang on my couch watching daytime TV that I don't usually get to see.

That sucks that you don't get the holiday. :(

You people and your holidays! BAH!

Our weekend was BUSY!  We got the move done.  We're in.  Kitchen is almost unpacked, bathroom is done, living room/office are 50% done.. bedrooms are piles of boxes.  lol

    How was your weekend, Hazel?

My weekend was pretty uneventful to be honest. Just worked around the house mainly, owning a house is so time consuming!

Here's a question for you. Today is Family Day in Ontario and I don't get it, but I do get Rememberance Day/Veterans Day. My co-worker prefers if we switched. I don't know what I'd prefer. I like having the opportunity to do Rememberance Day services, so I don't think I'd want to give it up. What would you do?

My weekend was uneventful as well. Got chores done around the house and did some shopping for costumes for a race I'm doing this weekend. I work at a University in the US and yet we don't get President's Day off. I can't really complain... we get a bunch of other days off and a ton of vacation days. But it would still be nice if I wasn't here!

I'd take Remembrance Day.  I'd rather go to the ceremonies and such then take a "family day". Now maybe if I had kids and this was a opportunity to spend a long weekend with them ...that might be different.

Paige - I feel the same way. Maybe if I had kids it'd be different. However, February weather is so unpredictable. Sure it'd be ncie to have a day off, but that doesn't you can really plan for anything today...just in case. I'm just not accustomed to ever planning anything in the winter, aside from a week to get away from here.

My sister and I were talking about this last night actually, we both agreed that we should have Remembrance Day as a Canada-wide stat. Family Day is so weird, it seems more like they said "gee, we don't have a holiday between Christmas and Easter" than anything else.

SopChick - This'll sound a bit screwy. I think Rememberance Day should be stat for everyone but teachers. I think children should learn about the day via school, I don't trust parents to do it really. Plus, as part of the day schools tend to hold ceremonies of their own.

Basically I think the day should be devoted to the idea and some people may have to work to do that.

I'm Family Daying. AKA sitting on my butt trying to plan our vacation :D:D

BF's Dad dropped off his cat this morning. We're catsitting her for the week while he's on vacation in Dominican. I'm loving her - she's so funny. We've already discovered she likes to break into the bathroom, and our door doesn't close properly no matter what, so that should be awkwardly fun with company heh.

Oh, and I'd rather have Remembrance Day off. Family Day is kind of a pointless holiday, but Remembrance Day actually means something. Maybe you've said this already, but why is it switched for you?

Beads - It's this way in my union agreement, the agreements haven't been updated since Family Day came in. So, I'm not sure what will happen.

Hazel - I completely agree about the school thing with regards to Remembrance Day. I don't have any kids, so I don't know whether there's a big deal made in schools anymore, but I remember always having a big assembly in elementary school. I remember being honoured to be chosen to carry the flag for the ceremony,  the band teacher playing taps, making construction paper poppies and learning why we have them as a symbol, learning how to respect a moment of silence and not giggle when you're 6...

I think my sister is just upset about Family Day being provincial because her DH works for Canada Post - Federal, so she's home alone all day with the kids, and he's at work ;)

SopChick - Yeah, no idea what will hapen with Family Day. Feds already have the civic holiday in August, so I'm not sure if they'll give them Family day too.

It's Louis Riel day here, but because my company is a national company and not all provinces have a holiday we are open. I didn't have to work but could volunteer to work and get paid 2.5 time so I'm working 2-10 :( I'm really regretting it. Hopefully it will be slow though which will give me lots of time to work on the blanket I'm crocheting for a friend's baby!

Dude family day was totally a "We don't have a holiday between Christmas and Easter" holiday.  They're talking about doing it here too...simply for the fact that we get nothing between Christmas and Easter.

Yeah, I've been keeping an eye on that kid for the past year...he's a good kid and I'm so happy for him (and I'm a huge fan of his team, the Wood Brothers, too).

I don't get today off either, but FI does. It totally varies on where you work.

My commute this morning was awesome. I wish it were like that every day.
