Wedding Vows & Ceremony Discussions

sunset ceremony??

I've always dreamed of having a sunset ceremony, surrounded by candles and white lights. Our venue is a lakefront cottage, and we are planning to be married on the lawn overlooking the lake. But I can't figure out how to make everything work if we were to have the ceremony in the evening.

The lake location is approximately 30 minutes from town, so we will be providing transportation for guests, so they don't have to worry about finding DDs or getting cabs, but we would still like to have a dinner and dance. I fear that a sunset wedding is too late to do all of these things, especially since my sweetheart is a traditional guy and doesn't want to see me before I walk down the aisle.

Has anyone had a sunset sedding? How did it work out?

Thanks!

<div>Well, you could educate him on the REAL reason that little deal ever started.  Not seeing each other prior to the ceremony has NOTHING to do with incurring bad luck.  Brides wore veils and the B&G didn't see each other prior to the ceremony so the groom couldn't back out of the wedding if the bride was ugly or unattractive.  Google it.  Modern day society has rewritten many wedding traditions to have a romantic, dreamy reason, when in fact they started out pretty heinous towards women.</div><div>

I know why you posted the info you did, kmmsg, but I found it really harsh.  My husband and I also followed tradition and didn't see each other before the ceremony and I don't feel like it was degrading to women or any other such thing.  If they want to do it that way, that's their choice.

I hadn't really thought about whether him seeing me before I walked down the aisle was a big deal or not until now. I had contemplated doing the pictures beforehand, but then the one picture we'd be missing would be the expression on his face when we see each other for the first time. That's the picture I'D like to have.

Dusk will be around 830, so maybe a 730 ceremony would be ideal. It would give us the waning daylight, not be too hot, and we could get some nice sunset pics. But would it be too late to have a meal???

    I don't think 7:30pm is too late.

Your photographer can certainly take a picture of your husband's face when he sees you for the first time if you walk down the aisle.  Talk to them about this - you don't need to skip the tradition if you don't want to.

My husband really wanted to keep it and so did I.  I feel like First Looks are so contrived and trendy - but that's my opinion.  Not that the walk down the aisle isn't contrived, but at least it's part of the ceremony.  I also don't like the "private moment/calm your nerves" argument because the reason everyone does it is for pictures and tries to defend it with this reasoning.  Before the idea of a First Look, no one was saying "oh, I want a quiet moment with my fiance!"  It's fine to own that you want the pictures.

You can also just do some of the pictures beforehand to lessen how many you need to do after!
