Wedding Vows & Ceremony Discussions

Vows

I've got to say that I just not a traditional type of girl....I don't want the big fancy white dress, the go all out type of princess wedding....it's just not me. That's not what I choose. I can honestly see myself just eloping, in a destination type of wedding. However, that's not the plan. My fiance and I are going to have a small, intimate ceremony with our bridal party, parents, and grandparents, then everyone else is coming for a reception party.

Anyway, so with that said, I was thinking about other things that have to be done like vows. I don't want to offend anyone, and this isn't meant to be offenive, but for me personally, I feel like vows are kind of cheesy. I don't like doing the same old same old as everyone else is doing. I'm not religious at all, and neither is my Fiance. I thought of writing our own vows, which we probably will..but I want short and sweet, nothing cheesy....any ideas of how to do this? I honestly am not into the whole production of a wedding...I just want to marry the love of my life.

Re: Vows

  • I'm not religious either.  I just did a search on the knot for wedding vows and the "ethical humanist" ones are pretty short and sweet.

Just stick to what is legally required in your state, and you can't go wrong.  It will be short and sweet.  Your officiant can guide you.
  • I thought this was interesting...Mathew McConaughy and his bride whispered their vows to each other
  • Talk to your the person marrying you. Vows are another thing that are not necessary, there are usually only a few phrases that are legally required to be said and anything other than that is your choosing. Talk to the person and see what they come up with, usually they can give you example or help you set up a short simple ceremony, and if you dont want to write vows then maybe just saying the legal phrases may be the way to go.

  • Thank you for the advice everyone! I talked with my Fiance about it and he agreed that he didn't want it all mushy gushy and long either. We want short and sweet, just the legal stuff. I also talked with a guy that may be marrying us and he said that he could marry us in under 5 minutes. I'm all for it!!! :)
