Dogs in weddings...

I love critters and all, but... dogs in weddings seem like overkill to me. Thoughts?

(Just saw a wedding with a black lab as a ring bearer.)

Our mutley, Zoe, was at our wedding in spirit.  She graced all of our tables as the bearer of numbers.  No rings for her.

I would love to have my dogs in my wedding. Whenever BF's sister asks if she will be in our wedding I tell her she's the dog escort. That being said, I dont like the idea of having your dog in your wedding. The whole idea of a dog being that close to an expensive dress spells diaster to me.
I was watching a wedding show where the girl wanted her dog in the wedding but her parents said no so she had the florist make a flower dog for the escort card table..which I thought was a super cute idea.

it better be one freakin well behaved dog....

I love my dog. I love him a lot. He will not be at my wedding. I think the idea is cute in theory but just as I will not ask my 2 year old cousin to be the ring bearer because then someone will have to take care of him the whole time, I will not ask someone to watch my dog. Also, my dog was neglected and possibly abused before we got him so he is very nervous and scared around new people/things. He does this army crawl thing whenever I take him to the groomer because he's scared. I can just imagine him army crawling down the aisle...or just flat out refusing. Not worth it for me. FBIL can carry the rings.

that flower dog is scary as all hell.

    I love dogs.
    I love my dog.
    She's well behaved and friendly.

I'd rather die than have her at my wedding.

Same thing goes for kids though....

I agree. After being at my family christmas this year watching my little cousins run around being little terrors my FI and I looked at each other and said nope! It was up in the air prior to that, and watching these kids really helped us make up our minds. I have already spoken to most of the parents involved. I was suprised by their reactions. They were actually happy about it. Said thanks, and they will enjoy their night alot more having their kids with a babysitter.

Interesting on the kids front.  We couldn't have imagined our wedding without having all of them around.  Then again, our reception was on a farm with lawn games.  Plus one of the older cousins asked if she could be in charge of the little ones.  They were very entertained and their parents were able to enjoy the reception.  I think it would have been different if most of the kids were under the age of 5.

Our neices and nephews are old enough that we arne't worried. But they likely won't be there anyway - the whole elope or weirdo wedding thing.

Just saw an ad for drive through wedding in Vegas. I'm going to tell my mom THAT's the plan, so anything else I do sounds much better.

If we were to be doing our wedding in my friends barn out on their farm like I suggested to FI at the beginning it would be a lot different. There kids would have a place to run and play. At my venue there isn't anywhere for them to run or play or be outside. In all honestly I don't know that it would really be all that much fun for them.

This is awesome! I used to do that to my mom too. At one point I told her that I was having hunter orange club dresses as bm dresses. I feigned all seriousness on it. It also helped that I really did have a thing for bright orange for a while.

I don't think a dog should be tortured like that.  I guess if it's an outside farm wedding or something then the dog can show up.  But I think BP is torture to the poor critter.

My sister photographed a wedding with a dog, and while it wouldn't work in alot of settings and for alot of dogs, it was actually really sweet. The wedding was outdoors in a pavilion, and the dog just kind of roamed around during the ceremony, and decided to lie down right behind his owners as they exchanged vows: http://marypena.smugmug.com/gallery/8662199_dMKU

If your wedding is the sort of picnic/barbeque where you would normally bring your dog, I can see it being really cool.

Ha.  You could change beebees to newbies and it would still be accurate.  I realized that I rarely like a newbie, no matter how rational or normal.  I hate them all (well, not all.)

I like the idea in theory, but my dog? No way. That would just not work. Plus it just seems like it would be tiring to wonder about the well being of of him while the day went on and I'd likely find it hard to enjoy myself as much.

Last August I got to be the caretaker of a dog at a wedding. She wasn't in the wedding, but she was there. She was small and easy to handle, but the bride kept having to come and check on her. And the dog was scared out of her mind (timid little thing), so she wouldn't go potty no matter how often I took her, so I eventually had to track down the brideand interrupt her mingling to ask her to do it so the poor thing wouldn't explode.

So yeah. Just seems like too much work, all things considered.

No, not really. I think the bride just wanted her there because the dog is her baby. Kinda a "family" thing. Which I totally get the desire to do that, but I don't think the poor dog really enjoyed it at all. But it made the bride and groom happy so *shrug*

My FI wanted our dog to be in the wedding, and I put my foot down.

Don't get me wrong. I love my puppy. I adore my puppy. She's my baby girl and all that ushy-gushy mushy stuff. However, I know our puppy. She's nuerotic, very excitable, and she's highly attached to both FI and myself. That being said, if we were in involve her in the wedding, it would very likely result in her:

    a) Pulling whomever is walking her down the aisle to the point of being choked by her own collar, just to get next to FI

    b) Her jumping all over FI's nice clean tux

    c) Her attempting to jump all over mommy's nice clean white wedding dress when I get up to the officiant

    d) Her spending the entire ceremony whining and crying because someone's keeping her from being next to mommy and daddy

We're likely dropping her off at our friends' for the day/night. They have another dog and a cat, and a big backyard, so she'll have a field day running around and playing while we're getting hitched.
