Religious Readings

Any ideas for religious readings for our ceremony.  We are not religious but know that our parents would appreciate this.  Share what you are using please :)

    My friend is reading from Corinthians as that passage was the first one I ever associated with, the first one I ever heard my pastor read in my college ministry, and this friend reading was there at my baptism. So it means a lot to me.

    Yeah, the 1 Corinthians one is very popular: "love is patient, love is kind, etc."

    Another one we used that isn't used as often is Solomon 2: 10-16.

    We chose from these verses which were listed in the suggested ceremony order given to us by our pastor:

    Genesis 1:26-28 (Male and female he created them)
    Genesis 2:4-9, 15-24 (A man cleaves to his wife and they become one flesh)
    Song of Solomon 2:10-13; 8:6-7 (Many waters cannot quench love)
    Tobit 8:5b-8 (New English Bible) (That she and I may grow old together)

    1 Corinthians 13:1-13 (Love is patient and kind)
    Ephesians 3:14-19 (The Father from whom every family is named)
    Ephesians 5:1-2, 21-33 (Walk in love, as Christ loved us)
    Colossians 3:12-17 (Love which binds everything together in harmony)
    1 John 4:7-16 (Let us love one another for love is of God)

    Matthew 5:1-10 (The Beatitudes)
    Matthew 5:13-16 (You are the light . . . Let your light so shine)
    Matthew 7:21, 24-29 (Like a wise man who built his house upon the rock)
    Mark 10:6-9, 13-16 (They are no longer two but one)
    John 15:9-12 (Love one another as I have loved you)

    For our two readings we had a secular reading and the Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi - we were both raised Catholic and but had a non-denominational religious ceremony.  This was our nod to our upbringing.

    Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
    Where there is hatred, let me sow love.
    Where there is injury, pardon.
    Where there is doubt, faith.
    Where there is despair, hope.
    Where there is darkness, light.
    Where there is sadness, joy.
    O Divine Master,
    grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled, as to console;
    to be understood, as to understand;
    to be loved, as to love.
    For it is in giving that we receive.
    It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
    and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life.
    Amen.

    @ Gundy

    I love the prayer of St. Francis.  Since we're having a Catholic ceremony, our readings have to be Scripture, but we're thinking of having the song version of the prayer of St. Francis as one of our songs during the ceremony.  Very beautiful.

    @Monkey - It was always my favorite.  I like the song version, too.  Plus, I just love his life story - so inspiring, no matter what your religious affiliation.
