NEY MD: Cankersore

So I have had a massive cankersore right inside my lip for a couple weeks now. I am super self concious about it when I talk.  I ended up biting it off (bad, I know) last week because it had gotten so bad and I could barely talk. It keeps coming back and is driving me bonkers! I have tried salt water, but it's in a really awkward spot so it's hard to do.

Any special remedies you have found that work? TIA!

Re: NEY MD: Cankersore

  • I've tried peroxide before when I had a really bad one and that helped. It really doesn't taste like much either.

It might be a good idea to go get some numbing gel to put on it too. That way it'll be more tolerable until it heals. I can't remember which kind I usually use, but I think it's Orajel.

I hate cankersores. I usually get about 3 at a time and then none for a long time. It's always when I'm super stressed out. I usually use mouthwash a lot when I have them to clean out my mouth often too.

Dabbing apple cider vinegar (the whole organic stuff is what I use) helps alot, but I'll warn you it hurts alot when you do it.

Edit - It hurts when you are dabbing the vinegar on, but the pain goes away for quite awhile and it heals faster too.
  • thanks! I'll try these.

  • I have chronic cankers, so I feel your pain! I use Kank-aid to numb it and it seems to keep me from messing with it so it can heal faster. Also swishing with a mouth rinse that is 1/2 C Listerine or other mouth wash, 1/2 C water and 3ish tblsp of peroxide keeps your mouth super clean to allow the sore to heal. Good luck!

PS: I've never tried the apple cider vinegar, but I wouldn't be against trying that!

  • Cco - Have found that the vinegar works great, plus I always have it in the house so it is an easy solutions for me. Diluted apple cider vinegar also works well for heartburn. It is a little miracle worker :)
  • I got this numbing stuff, I think it's called Kanka. It doesn't work for a terribly long time but it gave me relief when I had huge canker sores from my retainer.

Word to the wise - make sure the cap is closed really tightly when you're done using it. One time it fell and my mom got it all over her hand then tried to wash it off - but it hardens when it gets wet...whoops! She was NOT happy.

  • Orajel will help it feel a little better!!

I get cold sores, rarely cankersores, but orajel always helps it feel a little better.
Used to be bourgehm. +1,500 posts. Silly knot

  • I use Kanka, it puts up a little film on it so that it heals better. When I do have to use it, the sore is gone in two days. I do also admit I do enjoy the numbing part a little
  • A hot tea bag (as hot as you can stand it) can work wonders. It needs to be regular black tea, though-not herbal tea. There is some sort of chemical in black tea that helps them heal. Also, try to avoid anything acidic (citrus, tomatoes), because that irritates them. I hope it goes away soon...I get them all the time, and they're awful!

  • I think there is a special mouthwash that helps cankersores heal and with the pain. Orajel helps too. If you get them a lot, it might be worth getting checked out by your doctor. Canker sores can sometimes be caused by a vitamin deficiency so he/she might be able to run a bloodtest to see if that is the case. Happened to me once because of a digestive disorder, otherwise I never would have known that. Hope you feel better.

  • BF also uses Kanka when he gets really bad cankersores.  It helps him numb the pain long enough to be able to eat dinner and enjoy it.  I haven't actually had any really bad ones before so I can't give a personal recommendation.
