Suicide by Roller Coaster?

http://news.discovery.com/tech/euthanasia-sucicide-rollercoaster-ride-110919.html

A friend posted this link on FB yesterday saying if he had a choice this would be the way he would go. What do you think? It's extremely interesting to me but at the same time it makes my skin crawl.

Please tell me your thoughts, I would love to discuss this!

Re: Suicide by Roller Coaster?

  • Ew. I think it would be incredibly traumatic for all the other people on the roller coaster...

I have a lot of tolerance for many things but suicide really upsets me because I think it's a very selfish thing to do...
And if the stormy weather came...I'd just kiss you in the rain... Daisypath Anniversary tickers image
  • I think my reaction is visceral given that I'm sitting here with a look of horror on my face and a slightly curled lip and a desire to have never known this information.

Did you read the article? The ride is what kills you. Anyone on the coaster would die.

  • This is disgusting to think about.

  • Wow. That is prettty disturbing. Very interesting, but very disturbing. I don't think that would be my preferred method of euthenasia, if I were to decide to do that, lol. I think that first climb would be the worst 2 minutes of my life!

I can agree with that, but I view euthenasia more along the lines of the person having a fatal disease and it's going to be incredibly painful and they know they're going to die (zero hope for recovery), so they choose to just speed up the process. I'm not saying I agree with it, but I've never been in that situation either, so who knows.

This I can get on board with, I just think it sometimes opens up a can of worms. I'm absolutely terrified of getting Alzheimers so I'm not sure what I would do in that situatin either...

I actually am terrified of that too. I've seen it happen to distant relatives and now my dad's mom is starting to develop signs, so it's really scary and not something I would wish upon any person. Truly a cruel disease.

  • As somebody who is obsessed with roller coasters and thinks voluntary euthanasia should be completely legal, I don't have any problem with this on principle. I don't know why so many of you do, actually. I do wonder, though, whether the experience would live up to the engineers' expectations. I mean, some of the fun of roller coasters comes from the fact that you know you're safe on it, so you can detach from instinct and enjoy the experience. When you know you are going to die, but you aren't sure exactly when or what it's going to feel like, I think panic would take over and you wouldn't be able to have the meaningful experience the article discusses. I also think death by G-force must be really uncomfortable.

I agree with this. If you watch the video at the end it shows a guy experiencing the g-force, and it doesn't look pleasant. Also I don't get how the greying out, blackout, or dizziness would be an amazing feeling? I do not feel amazing in any of those situations.

I also agree about the euthanasia in general too. If you know that you are going to die, and can choose how to go, why not be allowed the privilege? It's your life, and I feel you should be able to make the decision on how it's going to end if you know that time is coming anyways. I also think that it is completely different then suicide in general.

I agree with both of you on the euthanasia fact. I'm more... i don't even know what I feel about mixing something I love and adore so much (roller coasters) with killing people. I suppose if that's how you want to go out... then sure... IDK... it's just odd to me that someone would go to that great a length to create a killing roller coaster...

I do agree with the first bolded part, mostly anyway, which is why I find this interesting. The second bolded part is the main reason why I find it disturbing. It's interesting to me that someone designed this to kill people - granted for a decent reason, but still, the thought that went into how rapid turns, speed and G-force can kill a human being is just...intense. I also shudder to think if anything went wrong with the ride and it was a much gorier death than intended.

How do they test it? Do they have someone use it that wants to die? Then what if it didn't work? That person would be far worse than before they got on in the first place. Do they go around again? Do they only run it for one person? Or do you sign up to go with a group?

Too many questions. I swear I'm going to have a nightmare about this. Maybe I'm morbid but this fascinates me so much.

The mechanisms by which g-forces kill people, and the amount of g's that can be withstood by the average person, are pretty well understood. There has been a lot of research into that by various independent scientists and government groups; NASA and the Air Force, for example.

As long as the engineers are qualified, I doubt there would be many surprises.
  • I have a problem combining "fun" with death. I agree that people should be able to die gracefully when faced with some kind of terminal illness, but making it "fun" rubs me the wrong way. It rubs the the disgusted as fruitcake way.
  • It's not the voluntary Euthanasia part that I have an issue with. It's just thinking of the logistics and everything. I don't think I'm going to be going on a rollercoaster again anytime soon...
    Wedding Countdown Ticker
  • I think this is a very interesting idea. I feel that suicide and euthanasia are two completely different terms, and I have completely different views on both. I think assisted suicide for person with a terminal or severely debilitating illness should be legal. My first thought about the roller coaster was the same as Elle, I don't think it would be fun and/or thrilling if the end result was death rather than a safe ride
